Did You Know?
  • One pint of blood can save as many as three
    lives.
  • About every two seconds, someone in America needs
    blood.
  • Approximately one out of every three of us will
need blood in our life time.
  • Even with all of todays technology, there is no
    substitute for blood.
  • Someone has to give blood in order
    for someone to receive blood.

6
Did You Know?
  • Approximately only 4 of the eligible population
    in our region donates blood.
  • Nationally, only 5 donate blood.
  • 75 of donors only donate 1 time per year.
  • The average donor donates 1.7 times per year.
  • If they donated just two times per year the blood
    level would be much safer.

7
Did You Know?
  • Persons ages 17 and up can potentially donate
blood. (Age 16 in New York State)
  • A person can donate blood every 56-days (about
    every 2 months).
  • A person has 10-12 pints of blood in their body.
  • Typically, blood volume is replaced in 24-hours
    after donation.

8
Did You Know?
  • Most people who have never donated have never
    been asked.
  • Posters dont recruit donorspeople do.

10
And Another Reason

    transfusions each year.
  • Females receive 53
  • Males receive 47

11
More Reasons
  • On an average day in the U.S., 1,280 babies are
born pre-term (less than 37 weeks of development)
  • A premature baby may need 1 to 4 units of red
    cells while in intensive care.
  • Open heart surgery for a newborn may take
  • 1 -4 units of red cells
  • 1-2 units of plasma
  • 1-3 platelet transfusions

Recipient Saved
At two years old, Emily Trotta of Wappinger
Falls, NY, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Since the
diagnosis, the Trottas life has been a roller
coaster ride of hospital stays and chemotherapy
treatments. There have been lengthy hospital
stays and several transfusions when Emilys blood
count lowered. Emilys mother says that She is a
spitfire, she remains in good spirits, and, when
she can, she tries hard to keep up with her
brothers.
13
And Even More Reasons
  • Approximately 1,500 people die from cancer each
    day.
  • In the U.S., 1 of every 4 deaths is from cancer.
  • Advances in diagnosis and treatment have
    dramatically improved survival rates.
  • Transfusion of red cells and platelets are an
    integral part of treatment.

14
Who Do You Know That Has Needed Blood?
  • The New York-Penn Region forecasts that the need
for blood in the hospitals we serve will increase
    5 each year.

15
What is Life Share?
Life as in helping save a life, and Share
as in helping to do your fair share.
Everyone must do their fair share to ensure an
adequate blood supply.
