- One pint of blood can save as many as three
lives. - About every two seconds, someone in America needs
blood. - Approximately one out of every three of us will
need blood in our life time. - Even with all of todays technology, there is no
substitute for blood. - Someone has to give blood in order
for someone to receive blood.
6Did You Know?
- Approximately only 4 of the eligible population
in our region donates blood. - Nationally, only 5 donate blood.
- 75 of donors only donate 1 time per year.
- The average donor donates 1.7 times per year.
- If they donated just two times per year the blood
level would be much safer.
7Did You Know?
- Persons ages 17 and up can potentially donate
blood. (Age 16 in New York State) - A person can donate blood every 56-days (about
every 2 months). - A person has 10-12 pints of blood in their body.
- Typically, blood volume is replaced in 24-hours
after donation.

been asked.

born pre-term (less than 37 weeks of development) - A premature baby may need 1 to 4 units of red
cells while in intensive care. - Open heart surgery for a newborn may take

12Recipient Saved
At two years old, Emily Trotta of Wappinger
Falls, NY, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Since the
diagnosis, the Trottas life has been a roller
coaster ride of hospital stays and chemotherapy
treatments. There have been lengthy hospital
stays and several transfusions when Emilys blood
count lowered. Emilys mother says that She is a
spitfire, she remains in good spirits, and, when
she can, she tries hard to keep up with her
brothers.
13And Even More Reasons
- Approximately 1,500 people die from cancer each
day. - In the U.S., 1 of every 4 deaths is from cancer.
- Advances in diagnosis and treatment have
dramatically improved survival rates. - Transfusion of red cells and platelets are an
integral part of treatment.
14Who Do You Know That Has Needed Blood?
- The New York-Penn Region forecasts that the need
for blood in the hospitals we serve will increase
5 each year.
15What is Life Share?
