What is Phonics?

• The set of relationships between the sounds of
  speech and the spelling patterns of written
  language.

Why Phonics Instruction?

• Helps children associate letters with sounds
• Contributes to spelling abilities
• Enables children to decode automatically
• Children with efficient decoding strategies find
  reading enjoyable and read more

Phonics Concepts

• The English language has 26 letters
• The English language has 44 sounds

Vowels

• Vowels a, e, i, o, and u
• Short vowels make their sound as in cat and fit
• Long vowels shout their name as in lake and
  bike
• All other letters are consonants
• b, d, j, m, and z

Consonant Blends

• Two consonants together that both make their own
  sound
• Initial consonant blends are at the beginning of
  words drip, from, and skip
• Final consonant blends are at the end of words
  camp, last, and risk

Consonant Digraphs

• Two adjacent consonants that make a new sound.
• Examples
• th this
• ch chin
• sh wash
• ph phone
• wh whale

Vowel Digraphs

• Two or more adjacent vowels in a syllable that
  represent a single sound
• Examples
• meet
• sea
• pain
• say
• soap
• mail

Magic e

• Words that have a long vowel sound and a silent e
  at the end
• Examples lake, kite, rate, tone, and mule

Syllable

• Part of a word that includes a vowel and is
  pronounced as a unit
• Examples
• napkin nap-kin
• tablet tab-let
• butterfly but-ter-fly

Segmenting Phonemes

• To pronounce a word slowly, saying each sound
  distintcly
• Examples

• s-a-t
• b-o-x
• m-u-g

Blending Phonemes

• To combine the sounds represented by letters to
  pronounce a word
• Examples
• p-i-g pig
• s-a-t sat
• b-o-x box
• m-u-g mug
• l-e-g leg

Spelling

• Our Spelling words consist of 5 phonetic words
  and five word wall words
• The first 5 words on the spelling list target one
  phonics rule
• The second 5 words are word wall words from our
  Blue Reader, Scott Foresman Series

Spelling

• Students will take home their spelling notebook
  daily, and will have nightly homework. This will
  help prepare them for their test.
• Our spelling tests will be on Fridays
