1Reception and Year One Phonics Meeting
2 Todays workshop
To share how phonics is taught at Datchet To
develop parent confidence in helping their
children with phonics and reading To teach the
basics of phonics and useful phonics terms To
show examples of activities and resources we use
to teach phonics To explain the phonics
screening test To share websites parent's can
use
3What is Phonics?
- Children have 20mins daily discrete phonics
lessons - Children are taught to read by breaking down
words into separate sounds or phonemes. They
are then taught how to blend these sounds
together to read the whole word - There are around 40 different sounds and 140
ways to combine letters to make these sounds
4(No Transcript)
5Phoneme/sound- the sound the letter makes e.g
a Grapheme/letter the shape of the letter and
its shape e.g. a Digraph two phonemes that make
one sound e.g ai (rain ) Trigraph three
phonemes that make one sound e.g igh
(night) Split digraph in written form a digraph
split in the middle by a single phoneme e.g a-e
make Cvc/cvcc consonant, vowel,
constant Segmenting how words are broken up
into individual sounds e.g. dog d-o-g Blending
how sounds are put together to make a word eg.
d-o-g dog Fred fingers using fingers to
highlight individual phonemes in words
6How do we teach phonics We look at the sound We
say the rhymes ie ar ar start the car We look at
words which contain the sound and read them We
look at words that we can spell with the
sound We play games containing the sounds that
we have learnt
7When reading a word in phonics we use sound
buttons rain
8How would you sound out this word using sound
buttons? Farmyard Chimpanzee
9When writing a word in phonics we use phoneme
frames. This helps us to learn how to segment the
different sounds

10How would you segment this word? Summer
s u mm er
11Examples of games we play Whats in the box?
children have to match a picture to a word Stand
up if you have a word with the sound/digraph
. Full Circle children have to change one
sound in each word until they are back to the
original word Ship, chip, chin, thin, than, can
and so on. Count down how many words can they
read before the timer runs out.
12This is how we teach a sound
13Phonics AssessmentYear 1
14What is the phonics assessment?
- Every Year 1 child in the country will be
taking a statutory phonics screening check in
the same week. - The check is very similar to tasks
the children already complete
during phonics lessons. - The focus of the check is to provide evidence
of childrens decoding and blending skills, not
to test their vocabulary.
15What will the children do?
- Each check will take 4 to 9 minutes to
complete - They will be asked to sound out a word and
blend the sounds together. e.g. t-r-ai-n, train - The check will consist of 40 words and
non-words - Children will be told if the word is a real or
nonsense/alien word, with a corresponding alien
image.
16Examples of words
17How will it be administered?
- Mrs Midgley and Ms Powell will conduct all
of the - screening checks with the children
- The children will complete the check one
to one in a quiet area of the - school
-
- We are not permitted to indicate to the
children at the time whether - they have correctly sounded out and /
or blended the word.
18What happens next?
- If your childs score falls below the national
standard they can re-take the Phonics Screening
Check in year 2. -
19When will it happen?
- The screening will take in June 2016
- It has been designed so that children of all
abilities will be able to take part.
20How can you help?
Encourage them to use their sounds and actions to
find the sound they need. Children can practise
their phonics by playing games online. Phonics
play is particularly good Buried Treasure
Poopdeck Pirates Picnic on Pluto
21How can you help?
- REMEMBER Phonics is not the only way you become
a good reader. Continue to read with your child
each night and encourage them to - Sound out, re-read to check it makes sense, and
use pictures for clues. - Ask questions about the book
- And most importantly ENJOY READING!
