1
WOMEN KEY TO TACKLING SOCIAL CHALLENGES

2
Introduction
  • Let me again introduce myself. My name is Rose
Nwokoji and today, I will be addressing how women
can help prevent or reduce some of the social
challenges we face in our present day society
  • I am passionate about helping people, especially
juveniles and those that may be anguishing over
an injustice they have suffered or are suffering,
and I am fortunate to be a part of The
    Organization Against Injustice Social
    Malpractice (TOAISM) International

3
Introduction contd.
  • The objectives of TOAISM International include
  • Educating teenagers on alternatives to violence
    and gangs
  • Working with juveniles leaving the justice system
to help them get reintegrated into the community
and become useful and responsible members of
    their communities
  • Providing referrals and support services to those
seeking judicial remedies for injustice suffered

5
  • Poverty and oppression root causes of social
    problems
  • Psychological/mental conditions also cause
social problems although these may be linked
    sometimes to poverty and oppression

6
  • Caveat
  • Social problems not only caused by poor people.
Rich adults and children from rich families also
    engage in criminal activities
  • However, poverty and oppression contribute
    largely to many criminal activities

7
  • Is crime rate on the decline?

8
  • Some research also show that about sixty percent
of adult criminals have juvenile criminal
    records
  • Stop them young and crime rate may be lower

9
QUESTION
  • How can women help reduce social crime? What
role do or can women play in tackling many of our
    social problems?

10
  • Build strong families
  • Women are generally speaking, custodians of our
    children

  • We know now that
  • 1. Poverty and oppression are two major causes of
    many social problems
  • 2. We also know that even though statistics
indicate that crime rate is on the decrease some
statistics show that juvenile crime rate is on
    the increase
  • 3. Regardless of what statistics show, we agree
that even one juvenile still engaged in criminal
    activities is too many

15
  • 4. We also know that about sixty percent of adult
    criminals were juvenile offenders
  • Knowing then, that in about eighty percent of
cases where parent are divorced, mothers have
custody of the children, the onus is on mothers
to ensure that their children do not engage in
    criminal activities
  • http//www.gocrc.com/research/custody-stats.html

16
  • So what should mothers do?
  • L E R P
  • Look before you leap
  • Education is important
  • Read the signs
  • Prepare and take control
  • Look before you leap
  • Marriage (Parents, mothers get involved)
  • Babies (Can you care and provide for them)
  • Arm yourself
  • Degree, Diploma, Certificate, Skills
  • And this is the most important of all. The more
educated you are, the more likely you can
overcome poverty and oppression. And the more
educated you are the less likely your children
will engage in criminal activities, regardless of
    your economic status

17
  • Read the Signs
  • Know when spouse is speaking but not saying the
    word
  • Know when children need a little more attention
  • Prepare and Take Control
  • Get a job (changes may occur but it is better for
the children to have two working parents in the
home than one working parent and a miserable or
    absentee other)
  • Take quick action to help your child

18
  • If all women can do these, then
  • We would less likely have our children in a non
    original family setting (NOFS)
  • We could, with less difficulty, remove ourselves
    from oppressive situations
  • We would more likely be able to overcome poverty
    and the effects thereof

19
  • To sum up my message today, ladies, I am saying
that many of social problems are caused by
juveniles and when adults engage in criminal
activities, we find that about half or more than
half of them were also juvenile offenders.
  • If women are responsible for the juveniles in
about eighty to hundred percent of the time, then
we have a responsibility to ensure that they stay
out of crime. The best way to do this is to
remove the conditions that enable children to
engage in criminal and improper behavior. Those
conditions are poverty and oppression and we can
    remove them through practicing LERP.
