Dialogue Session

staff, and students to discuss the college
    community, desired institutional values, and
possible actions for future planning, moderated
    by Dr. Stephen Littlejohn.
  • The two-hour dialogue, attended by about 60
people was divided into three parts
  • Exploring our present experiences of BCC
  • Imagining BCC of the Future Looking at values
    to guide institutional planning
  • Generating ideas for change

16
What we see today
  • Bergen Community College is an institution that
greatly appreciates the open access given to
students, the resulting diversity in the student
body, and the cultural opportunities available.
It is also a college that employs a level of
    technology useful to many.

17
What we see today
  • The BCC system seems to have frustrating
roadblocks, and many of our respondents find
implementing change difficult. Many worry, too,
about poor communication, the lack of written
policies and procedures, and the inadequacy of
    planning.

18
What we see today
  • Many stakeholders see the College as driven by
enrollments, such that quantity is most valued
yet, faculty and staff feel the burden of heavy
    workloads necessitated by inadequately allocated
resources, and students feel that their needs are
    secondary.

19
What we see today
  • Members of the BCC community sometimes experience
the institution differently. Some find their
    relationships cooperative and collegial, while
others see apathy, cynicism, lack of unity,
incivility, and disrespect. Some appreciate the
opportunities that the College provides for
professional development and personal growth, but
others feel unappreciated and do not believe they
have adequate opportunities for training and
    advancement.

20
Values we want to guide planning
  • BCC is a community of integrity.
  • The quality of teaching and learning is highly
    valued.
  • The College encourages and supports innovation
    and creativity.

21
Values we want to guide planning
  • Listening, good communication, trust, and respect
    are engendered and practiced.
  • Everyone is treated fairly, and merit is valued.
  • Human resources are developed fully and are
    adequate to achieve excellence.

22
Whats Next?
  • These values will be sent to all members of the
college community to ascertain consensus or lack
    there of.
  • Mission and vision statement will be revisited in
light of the community wide response to these
    values.
  • Strategic planning committee will use these
values to shape the process and the new strategic
    plan.
