What are your rights?

• The UN states that all children have basic rights
• The right to survival (food, shelter, healthcare)
• The right to develop to the fullest
• The right to protection from harmful influences
  e.g. abuse and exploitation

What is child labour?

• Many children around the world do not have these
  basic rights
• child labour in many cases deprives children of
  the opportunity to attend school
• Or it requires them to combine extremely heavy
  workload with school

Child labour today

• There are 5.7 million children working in forced
  labour- slavery is not dead
• Children are often used to clear a family debt,
  this is called bonded labour
• Children are often tricked into sexual
  exploitation e.g. prostitution

• Children as young as 5 work 15 or 16 hours a day
  in domestic servitude (made to eat leftovers,
  receive little or no pay, abuse is common)

  labour? Think of as many examples of child
  labour that you can
• In groups discuss what might be the effects on
  children if they are forced to work

What is the extent of the problem?

• Child labourers can be found working in all
  regions of the world however the problem is
  undoubtedly more common in the developing world

Child labour often results in the following

• Exploitation of children through force, low
  wages, poor working conditions and abuse
• Denial of rights e.g. education, health
• Poverty
• Greed amongst employers
• Ignorance of people purchasing products made with
  child labour e.g. footballs as children stitch
  the footballs in India, Pakistan and China

How can we stop child labour

• Lots of groups will have to work together e.g. EU
  and UN
• The countries were there is child labour must do
  all they can to stop it
• Businesses must make sure child labour is not
  involved in products sold in the UK

• Take part in the writing competition to raise
  awareness
