  •  To promote a nurturing environment that helps
    students reach their full potential.

  • Purpose of the Mentor Program
  •   The Mentor Program was developed to pair
    students with positive role models who will take
    a personal and professional interest a students
    development and success throughout the their
    college experience.
  • Who are our Mentors?
  • Mentors are persons who will listen, understand,
    motivate, encourage students to define their
    objectives, and to achieve academic and personal
    success. Through interaction with students,
    mentors share their expertise and provide
    opportunities for students to develop a more
    realistic concept of college.
  •  
  • Who can be a Mentee?
  •   Any BCC student who wishes to enrich his/her
    educational experience and develop a unique
    relationship with a Mentor.

  • How does the process begin?
  • First time in college students ( FTICS-EWS) are
    usually mailed letters inviting their
    participation in the Mentor Program immediately
    after the enrollment period. At this point
    students will be more familiar with the campus,
    and its resources available. Continuing students
    are also encouraged to participate with priority
    given to FTIC-EWS students. Students who
    participate in the Mentor Program are then
    matched with a Mentor.

  • The Mentor Program has locations at the

  • How are contacts made with students?
  • Contacts between Mentors and Mentee are arranged
    at their mutual convenience. A weekly contact
    schedule is suggested with adjustments as
    mandated by students needs and the Mentors
    availability.
  •  
  • Follow-up procedures and Evaluation
  • Mentors and Mentees are asked to
  • 1.    Keep a contact log regarding mentees
    involvement and progress using the Mentor Contact
    forms provided in the mentees binder.
  • 2.    Maintain an ongoing communication with the
    Mentor Program Coordinator.
  • 3. Attend program activities and provide
    feedback on these experiences with the
    coordinator.
  • 4. Both the mentors and mentees are asked to
    complete a mentoring evaluation. The evaluations
    are used to help determine the effectiveness of
    the mentoring process, and to assist in the
    planning and restructuring of the program.

  • GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
  • It is the responsibility of both the students
    and the mentor to immediately set goals for the
    academic success as well as personal development.
  •   Objectives
  • The long-term objectives of the Mentor Program
    are to increase student retention and to provide
    an on-going orientation to all aspects of the
    College. More specifically, the program
    endeavors to
  • 1. Assimilate students into the academic
    community through their interaction with members
    of the college and community.
  • 2. Cultivate personal development, social and
    academic skills, which will enable students to
    understand the challenges of college and enhance
    opportunities for academic success.
  • 3.  Motivate student involvement in all aspects
    of college life.

  • 4. Enhance better relationships between students,
    administrators, faculty, staff and the community.
  • 5. Provide students with peer support group. 
  • 6. Develop a closer identification with the
    college through personal interaction with caring,
    supportive persons associated with the college
    and the community.

    and programs

  • WHAT OTHER SERVICES DOES THE PROGRAM HAVE TO
    OFFER?  
  • Ø    Tutoring - staffed by part-time, volunteer
    and work-study students, tutoring is available
    in many subject areas.
  • Ø  Information Referral - to other services
    such as career planning and counseling.
  • Ø  Workshops - that address college success and
    personal growth are offered every month.
  • Ø  College / Universities Transfer Visitation
    Trips - Trips to local and state institutions.
  • Ø  Scholarship Information - most popular web
    sites Choices, www.fastweb.com
  • Ø  Peer Mentoring Club - a student organization
    dedicated to helping students.

  • STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  •   We expect that you will
  • Meet with your Mentor, preferable weekly, on a
    pre-arranged schedule. You are required to
    complete at least 15 20 visits with your
    mentor.
  • Call in advance if you cannot meet with your
    Mentor at the scheduled time.
  • Arrange at least one visit to the Academic
    Advisement Center (Bldg. 68/213) each semester.
  • Let your Mentor know if you are having any
    difficulties.
  • Share your successes with your Mentor.
  • Contact the Mentor Program Coordinator whenever
    you have any questions about the program.
  • Complete evaluations and provide feedback about
    your experiences with the program.
  • Participate in programmatic activities, i.e.,
    orientations, social, tutorial experiences, and
    workshops.

Remember your Mentor wants you to SUCCEED!

  • MENTOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  •  
  • 1.   Provide individual contact, preferable once
    a week, with mentees during the academic
    semester.
  • 2.   Establish an informal, friendly environment
    to facilitate positive mentor/ mentee
    interaction.
  • 3.   Assist mentees in the learning process to
    maximize the achievements of their
    academic/personal goals.
  • 4.   Recommend strategies for academic
    improvement.
  • 5.   Encourage self-sufficiency through
    supportive guidance.
  • 6.   Help develop problem-solving skills.
  • 7.   Seek feedback on mentees academic
    performance by mid-term (7.5 weeks)
  • 8. Promote out of class interaction between
    students and members of the faculty.
  • 9. Be aware of both the academic and social
    support services on campus, please use the
    referral forms provided in the students binder.

  • The Mentor Program will provide excellent
    caring Mentors who will
  • Make sure communication is based on an even
    leveled scale.
  • Help students determine what is right so they can
    understand what is wrong.
  • Help students solve their own problems by
    providing information and encouragement.
  • Extend praise and constructive criticism.
  • Accept students as they are and help them to see
    their own unique abilities.
  • Encourage students to become aware of and utilize
    the support services available at Broward
    Community College.
  •        Provide confidentiality.
  •        Challenge students when they need it.
  •  
  • Mentors will not
  •        Give you unsolicited advice
  •        Be authoritarian and preachy
  •        Arbitrarily limit student goals and
    expectations
  •        Do things for the student.

  • HOW TO GET STARTED?
  •  
  • The first meeting with your mentee generally
    establishes the tone for the mentoring
    relationship. Therefore, it is essential that the
    mentee knows/feels that you are comfortable with
    the match. The following are suggested
    conversation starters
  •        Why did you choose Broward Community
    College?
  •        Who is your hero/role model? (Mother or
    Father? Instructor or Coach?)
  •        Who encouraged you to attend college?
  •        What are your goals for the semester?
    Year?
  •        How do you plan to accomplish your goals?
  •        How can I help you to accomplish your
    goals?
  •        What is your class schedule for the
    semester?
  •        How do you feel about your class
    schedule?
  •        What is your favorite subject? Why?
  •        What is your least like subject? Why?
  •        Do you know the names of your
    instructors?
  •        Do you know the names of the
    administrators on campus?
