1st Grade Lesson on Parts of the Plant
  • ByMarlene C. McRaeEDIT 430Spring, 2004

Introduction to PlantsAll living things depend
on plants for food/life. Plants have a life cycle
that begins with a part of the plant
  • Sometimes it is a part of the root that
becomes a new plant e.g. sweet potato
Sometimes it is a seed.  Sometimes it is a leaf
that becomes a new plant.  Sometimes it is a
part of the stem e.g. white potato. Our lesson
will use seeds to start a plant.

3
Parts of a plant
  • Plants have four main parts  Roots Stems L
    eaves Flowers/Fruit

4

What do roots do?
  •  Roots hold the soil in place in the
ground. Roots provide food to the plant. They
take minerals, oxygen and water from the soil and
send them through the stem to all parts of the
plant. Roots sometimes become something to eat,
e.g. carrots and beets. Root hairs are the
    roots mouth.

5
What do leaves do?
  •  Leaves make food for the plant. They use
water, sunlight, carbon dioxide to make sugar or
glucose which the plant uses for its food. The
process by which the leaves makes glucose is
called photosynthesis. Leaves give off oxygen
    and water.

6
Vocabulary Words
  • 1. Chlorophyll the green material in plants.2.
    Sunlight- provides energy to make
    food.3. Water.4. Carbon dioxide-a gas given off
by people and animals as they breathe.5. Oxygen
is a gas taken in by animals as they breathe.

7
What do stems do?
  •  Stems hold the plant upright. Stems carry
water and minerals from the roots to the
leaves. Stems can also become new plants.

8
What do flowers do?
  •  The flowers job is to make seeds. Flowers
produce pollen - which is a yellow dust needed to
form seeds. Flowers can become fruits or
vegetables or make a room look pretty (decorate).

9
Conclusion
The main parts of a plant are the leaves, stem,
flowers/fruit and roots. They all have their own
job to do so that the plant can continue its life
cycle and survive like all living things.
