BACKGROUND

• Assyrians were gaining power
• King Ahab (of Judah) sought help from Assyria
  condemned by Isaiah (71)
• Assyria takes over Northern kingdom, and makes
  Judah even more vulnerable.
• King Hezekiahs prayer in 701 BC keeps them at
  bay, as Isaiah predicted (376-7)
• But, their actions would lead to Babylonian
  exile. (thus restoration language in 40-66)
• Predicts rise of Cyrus (412), and the return
  home (527)

THEMES AND THEOLOGY

• God will bring judgment on Judah
• Gods judgment is called fire
• God is the Holy One of Israel
• Yet God will have compassion and rescue them,
  like in the Exodus
• The New Age would bring peace and safety
• The Messiah would be My servant
