4- In 2007, National Organizations for Youth Safety
(NOYS) began the National Youth Traffic Safety
Month campaign in conjunction with the United
Nations Global Road Safety Week. - Each May NOYS hopes to encourage teen-to-teen
safe driving projects in advance of the deadly
prom, graduation and summer driving seasons. - In the first two years of the campaign, more than
250 National Youth Traffic Safety Month teen-led
projects were conducted nationwide. - In both 2007 and 2008 the 50 top projects that
were registered National Youth Traffic Safety
Month projects received a 1,000 awards - In 2009, our goal is to further increase
visibility of National Youth Traffic Safety Month
and increase the number of teens involved in the
campaign.

6In the first two years of the campaign over
130,000 in awards were given to youth programs
to reward organizations for their youth traffic
safety projects sponsored by the Allstate
Insurance Co. (AIC) and The Allstate Foundation
respectively!

8- NYTSM Focus on nationally syndicated Fox Mike and
Juliet in the Morning!
9- In 2008 NOYS also introduced a new contest
sponsored by The Allstate Foundation as part of
National Youth Traffic Safety Month - Act Out Loud Raising Voices for Safe Teen
Driving - A national competition to empower youth formed
school teams to develop and implement youth
traffic safety activism projects.
10- Online viral contest using youth friendly
outreach including You-Tube youth team produced
videos, online voting, and blogging. - Prizes included
- 1,000 and a video camera for the top ten teams
- 10,000 to the first place team
- 5,000 to the second place team
- 3,000 to the third place team
- 5,000 award to national organization of the
first place team
11- High School Musical Lucas Grabeel served as the
spokesperson for Act Out Loud
12- First Place Team Bloomingdale High School
Valrico, FL - Bloomingdale High School encouraged safe teen
driving by promoting their Buckle Up program
through their student government. The team
filmed a short daily segment for their schools
TV station promoting seatbelt use and defensive
driving, as well as incorporating teen driving
statistics and interviews from students about who
wears seatbelts and why. The team also created
professional Buckle Up signs for the school

13- The Second Place team - Notre Dame Preparatory -
Scottsdale, Arizona - Notre Dame Preparatory spread the word about safe
teen driving awareness via a number of different
school activities, such as skits, videos, guest
speakers to talk about risks teen drivers face, a
school assembly, a mock car crash, contests
between homerooms to get students to join
keepthedrive.com and visuals around the school.
The team worked with the Scottsdale Police
Department to make the mock car crash a more
poignant experience for spectators. They also
planted 16 crosses in front of the school chapel,
representing the 16 teens that die in car crashes

14- Third Place Team - Oxford Academy Sophomore Class
Committee, Cypress, California - The Oxford team advocated safe teen driving
through many different methods. The team gave
presentations about teen driving statistics to
local drivers education courses and health
classes at school, hold a pep rally about
National Youth Traffic Safety Month, wrote
articles for the local newspapers, promoted their
efforts on community boards in stores around the
community and engaged fellow teen drivers through
parking lot demonstrations and grassroots street

15- Runner UP Bishop McNamara High School
Forestville, MD - Bishop McNamara High School (BMHS) has spent the
last two years educating the community about safe
teen driving. Their Web site www.teenroadskill.org
documents their projects and progress. BMHS
renewed their safe teen driving efforts through
the Act Out Loud program by hosting a teen
driving safety forum on April 26, as a service
learning program to teach others how to launch
safety programs in their own schools. The forum
included workshops, presentations and an
opportunity to plan an event for Mays National

16- Runner UP The Chelsea Team, Chelsea, Vermont
- The Chelsea Team, in partnership with the Orange
County Sheriffs department, produced two short
videos for the Orange County Sheriff departments
web site. The team felt compelled to promote teen
traffic safety after Vermont published its
Strategic Highway Safety Plan, which emphasized
the need to focus on teen driver crash rates and
the root causes. The videos enforced seatbelt use
and raised awareness about the most dangerous
summer times and days for teen drivers in

17- Runner UP Dermott High School, Dermott, Arkansas
- Dermott High created a week of skits and
activities during prom week to spread alcohol and
drug related crash information to students. Each
day focused on one teen driving related activity,
including an Every 15 Minutes skit, a guest
speaker and PowerPoint, an Arkansas state trooper
presentation on drunk driving scenarios, MADD
national Friday activities, and a mock crash with

18- Runner UP Great Plains Wrestling Club, Kearney,
Nebraska - The Kearney Wrestling Club developed the Always
Alert Always Alive program, taking place at the
high school from April 20-30. The teams program
aimed to wake up distracted teens and
encouraged students to commit to alert, safe and
responsible driving. Activities included
displaying a crashed car in the school parking
lot hosting a teen safety scavenger hunt and a
community showing of the video SMASHED Toxic
Tales of Teens and Alcohol, followed by a panel
discussion led by police, a state legislator, a

19- Runner UP Okeechobee Crime Watch - Okeechobee,
FL - The Okeechobee Crime Watch group incorporated a
variety of activities to support safe driving
advocacy. The schools 11th and 12th graders were
invited to participate in a simulated impaired
driving course in the days before prom. The team
also distributed Safe Drinking materials
(pamphlets, stickers, flyers, etc.) and worked
with local law enforcement, the Crime Watch Club
and Okeechobee High School students to spread

20- Runner UP Richmond High School - Richmond,
Indiana - The Richmond High School team promoted safe teen
driving by an aggressive Buckle Up campaign in
its school and community after four local boys
were in a car crash. In cooperation with a blood
drive and with the help of the mayor,
superintendent, student newspaper, and principal,
the Buckle Up campaign conducted surveys about
alcohol use, adults providing alcohol to minors,
distracted driving, and seatbelt use. The team
also placed a crashed car in front of the school
and stenciled Buckle Up on the school parking

21- Runner UP Wayne High School - Huber Heights,
Ohio -
- The Wayne High School team created a video to
convince students not to drink and drive,
especially after the prom. The video, titled
After Prom, plays out a scenario of five
friends at prom and the choices they make about
drinking and driving. It played at the beginning
of the schools After Prom party. The team wanted
to get the message across that you never know who
you could hurt when you drive drunk driving
