Frustration Disclaimer
  • The data presented in this presentation is
    incomplete
  • Collected data was on two floppy disks, one
    containing preliminary data, and another
containing more data and the final project. This
second disk was infected with and virus..and all
    data was corrupted.
  • The data sets salvaged from the first disk are
    from 2004 and 2000

3
Purpose
  • The purpose of this project was to examine both
the average difference between the life
expectancies of males and females and how these
spans have changed over the past 54 years.
  • Only citizens of the Louisville, Ky area were
    used in this study

4
Hypothesis
  • I expect to find that women have longer lives on
    average than men.
  • The average life expectancy for both genders will
have increased over the course of time.

5
Methods
  • Data was collected by examining obituaries and
collecting data about age at the time of death.
  • Recent deaths were taken from the Courier Journal
    website.
  • Older data (beyond the past year) was collected
by examining news papers on microfilm at the
    public library.

6
  • For each year examined, 15 male ages and 15
female ages for each month of that year were
    recorded in a spreadsheet.
  • The male and female values were then averaged.
  • The monthly averages were then averaged again to
    obtain a yearly mean.
  • The male and female yearly means were then
    compared.

Conclusions
  • Both hypotheses were confirmed- the women did
live longer than the men on average.
  • 5.14 years longer in 2004
  • 9.55 years longer in 2000
  • The overall age of men did increase over the four
    year span.
  • A difference of 4.41 years for men
  • There was no noticeable change in women.
