Title: LHC Hardware Commissioning
1LHC Hardware Commissioning
- Status and Outlook for the LARP Participation
2LHC Hardware Commissioning
Preparation Studies
After the qualification for operation of the
individual systems of a sector (vacuum,
cryogenics, quench protection, interlocks,
powering, etc.),
- focus
- availability of components
- description of individual system tests
- procedures,
- sequence,
- conditions required,
- schedule
- definition of hardware commissioning between all
system responsibles concerned - procedures,
- sequence,
- conditions required,
- schedule
- investigation of failure scenarios (AC
distribution, cooling and ventilation, vacuum,
cryogenic system, cold electrical circuits,
interlocks) - documentation
- minutes of meetings
- description of
- individual system tests
- hardware commissioning procedures
- procedures to be applied in case of failures
each sector will be commissioned as a whole up to
the powering to nominal current of all the
circuits.
Validation and specific studies will be
carried-out on the first commissioned sector.

The programme
- Basic Assumptions
- 5 day weeks
- two shifts (15 hour days)
- two adjacent sectors
- two fronts at any time in each sector
- generalist operator in the field control room

5LHC Hardware Commissioning
the superconducting electrical circuits
accent is put on the superconducting circuits but
we also have to commission the RF system, the
warm magnets, the injection system, the
collimator system, the dump system, etc.

11LHC Hardware Commissioning
Mechanical Engineer
- Participate in any surface fit up of magnets and
dfbx. - Take the responsibility (design, modifications,
manufacturing, follow-up) for the changes to the
interconnect kit if needed. - Help training the contractor in charge of the
interconnects and participate to the first
interconnects. Follow-up the others. - Participate in the review of the handling
procedures for the final positioning of the USLHC
deliverables. - Participate in the review of the interconnect
procedures. - Advise the survey team in the alignment
procedures.
12LHC Hardware Commissioning
Cryogenics Expert
- Review with CERN engineers the procedures for the
cool down of the inner triplet subsector - Participate in cryogenic connections in the
tunnel - During the cool down of the inner triplet
subsector, take part in the operation, monitor
the cryo instrumentation, participate to the
tuning of the control loops. - Perform specific tests such as "beam load
compensating" cryo heaters, the beam screens, the
quench pressure profiles and the heat loads - Participate in the cryogenic commissioning of the
DFBX with HTS power leads (tuning of the lead
flows, study of the stability during current
transients as well as in steady state conditions) - Participate in the definition of operation
procedures and maintenance plans as well as the
management of technical documentation - During operation with beam, study the effects of
beam load on cryogenic performance
13LHC Hardware Commissioning
Magnet Scientist
- Participate to the review of the interconnect
procedures, with emphasis on electrical aspects - Participate to the review of the cool down
procedure - Collaborate with technicians involved in
electrical quality assurance during assembly and
cool down to validate instrumentation and
insulation integrities. - Organize with CERN staff, the connections of the
cables to the power leads - Participate to the review of the procedures for
commissioning the electrical circuits - Participate to the powering tests
- Interpret magnet performance and protection data
during quench, ramps, etc - Act as a conduit for relaying data between US and
CERN including quench and magnetic measurements
(should largely occur prior to acceptance)

near future 1
- Installation Assembly
- The procedures for the interconnection of IT
magnets are expected to be defined by US-LHC and
will be applied to the warm fit-up in Q105 on
the surface. - Warm electrical quality assurance will be applied
to the individual components (HV tests) and to
the string which will be electrically connected
with temporary means (the busbars will not be
soldered). - Alignment procedures equipment specific to the
IT assembly will also be tested on the warm
fit-up. - The installation of the IT magnets in sector 81
is expected to start in Q405. - The TASs have been delivered and accepted they
are now owned by CMS and ATLAS awaiting
installation. The TAN is being looked at by TS-IC
and its installation is being studied.
15LHC Hardware Commissioning
near future 2
- Hardware Commissioning
- The first draft for the procedures for the
hardware commissioning of an inner triplet
subsector with or without D1 is almost ready for
Engineering Check by the authors. It is based on
the commissioning of an arc and was refined
during several ad hoc and general meetings which
took place in the course of the year. - The task descriptions for US-LARP participation
have been prepared might need refining. - Head hunting
- our needs are for
- electrical engineers
- quench protection specialist
- power converter specialist
- are probably more than what could be detached
from the US labs or that you would be eager to
fund in the US-LARP
16LHC Hardware Commissioning
in summary
- getting ready for the commissioning in general
and the IT region in particular - we need experts who will be active in the field
- with experience
- people in the tunnel getting their hands dirty
- to be deployed on hardware commissioning
- most critical need in electrical engineering,
quench protection, machine interlocks - we dont encourage short term (
- integrated in the equipment groups commissioning
the hardware - discussions are needed to finalize
- procedures,
- mission at CERN,
- roadmap in general,
