Title: Body Paragraphs

1
Body Paragraphs
  • Tell me what youre thinking

2
The Three Ied Monster
  • Identify
  • Illustrate
  • Interpret

3
The Three Ied Monster
  • IDENTIFY
  • Find a specific element in the text that supports
    your thesis.
  • Thesis David Bottoms uses claustrophobic images
of slavery, drug and alcohol use, and death to
portray the loneliness and depression of one
mans struggle for the ideal of freedom.
  • Textual evidence of slavery images?

4
The Three Ied Monster
  • Illustrate
  • Illustrate the elements place in the textin
other words, quote the place in the text where
    the element appears.
  • Smoking in an Open Grave a porthole filled
with stars (Bottoms 8) and When the shadows of
this life have grown, Ill fly away (6)
  • Shooting Rats at Bibb County Dump let them
crawl/for all theyre worth into the darkness
    were headed for (Bottoms 14-15)

5
The Three Ied Monster
  • Interpret
  • Interpret its function. Analyze the specific
elements of your thesis. Explain the significance
of the text (and your evidence) to your thesis.
Interpret the evidence and give provocative
analysis of your evidence in terms of each
paragraph element and the thesis as a whole. THIS
IS NOT SUMMARY. The majority of your paragraph
should be your interpretive analysis and not the
actual cited evidence. If your citations make up
more of the paragraph than your analysis, your
paragraph is not functional. It is ineffective
    and incorrect.

6
Another perspective
  • Each paragraph should be made up of the
    following
  • A claim or mini-thesis
  • Evidence
  • Analysis of the evidence and interpretation

7
Body Paragraphs
  • should be a road map of your thinking.
  • should provide clear, concise explanations of
    each element in your thesis.
  • should build a momentum in your paper like
evidence for the court. (And so, as you can see,
    he is guilty!!!)
