Title: Hi All,

1
  • Hi All,
  • This is Adi, here. Well, I am not actually here.
I am in Portland Oregon, but my brain is with
you. Well, OK, not really my brain, but the
electronic output of the I function of my brain
represented on Pauls computer (I think).
  • Anyway, I couldnt pass up the chance to be there
with you guys and do an exercise. So here goes
(if you all are done reading Paul can just hit
    the next slide button)

2
The I-Function of the Brain
  • Hello I-Function of fellow BBI members. We are
going to try to get you shut-up. Now hold on.
Dont get offended on me. We are just doing this
in order to allow the non I-Function part of the
brain to do some stuff its pretty good at. If
that works it may even make the I-Function feel
better about itself, or at least give it
something to think about. Are you ready? I said
are you ready? (thats ok you dont have to
answer out loud just have Paul click to the next
    slide)

3
Shutting I up
  • OK before we try to make your I-Function
shut-up, were going to do something which may
cause some of your I-functions to feel
embarrassment. Its something, some of you may
not have done since third grade. Its something
which you may be very bad at. But I am going to
ask you to do it anyway. Is your I- function
sufficiently nervous? Okay Paul, click to the
    next slide.

4
Instructions
  • Get out a piece of paper.
  • Got one, good now get an instrument of writing
  • Can you feel the suspense. Is it a pop-quiz on
    the I-function?
  • No
  • Paul next slide..

5
Drawing
  • You are going to Draw. Yup Draw. Like you did
back in grade school. Hey no groaning.
  • Whats more I want you to try as hard as you can
    to draw well.
  • You will have 3 minutes to try to draw the
following as accurately as you can. Paul, time
these guys and keep em- honest. Are you ready for
the next slide? Lets do it!

So how did that Feel?
  • OK how did that go?
  • How did it feel?
  • Lets not waste too much time talking about it
though. We want to save a little time for more
drawing. I know some of you felt bad about the
drawing so I am going to give you another shot.
  • Same picture.
  • Same amount of time.
  • One small twist (Paul get your stop-watch ready)

Times up!
  • Ok Times up!
  • How did you do?
  • Share the pictures with your neighbor.
  • Discuss the following
  • How are the pictures different?
  • Did it feel different to draw the pictures?

10
Drawing and the Brain
  • The exercise you just did was popularized in a
book called Drawing On The Right Side of the
Brain. I will let Paul explain Right Brain and
Left Brain he is the neurobiologist after all
(pardon me, applied neurobiologist) but I am
going to propose an alternate theory about why
this exercise works. Yup, the I function.

11
Drawing and the I-Function
  • I propose that when you are drawing the picture
upside down, you are forced to use less of your
I -Function in interpreting the picture. When
you draw using the I-Function, you try to draw
your (I-Functions) ideas of the objects. When
you draw upside down, you are forced to represent
lines without telling so many stories about them.
This turns out to make the job easier for most
    people.

12
OK, one more thing
  • Before we go, lets try to embarrass the
I-Function one more time. Can I have an
I-Function volunteer to come up to the front of
the class? If you dont do it I will choose one
of you. Ok great you here? Next slide!

13
Monkey Games
  • All right click on the link below, click on and
lets play. Play 7 rounds and play them quick, we

14
Is your I-Function slowing you down?
  • How did that go?
  • What was your experience of playing. Could you
find a way to quiet your I-Function while
    playing?
  • OK now lets watch a short and demoralizing film
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vravykEih1rE

15
Monkey Mind
  • Why did the monkey do so much better?
  • What implication does this have for the way we
    play sports?
  • What implications does this have for the way we
    educate?

One of the best songs dedicated to the I -
Function
  • All thru' the day I me mine, I me mine, I me
mine. All thru' the night I me mine, I me mine,
I me mine. Now they're frightened of leaving it,
Ev'ryone's weaving it, Coming on strong all the
time, All thru' the day I me mine. I-I me-me
    mine, I-I me-me mine, I-I me-me mine, I-I me-me
mine. All I can hear I me mine, I me mine, I me
mine. Even those tears I me mine, I me mine, I
me mine. No-one's frightened of playing it,
ev'ryone's saying it. Flowing more freely than
wine, All thru' the day I me mine. I-I me-me
    mine, I-I me-me mine. I-I me-me mine, I-I me-me
mine. All I can hear I me mine, I me mine, I me
mind. Even those tears I me mine, I me mine, I
me mine. No-one's frightened of playing it,
everyone's saying it, All thru' your life I me
    mine. ---- the Beatles
