History of the Civil Rights Movement
  • After the civil war in the United States, black
    people did not have
  • the same rights as white people. Restaurant
    owners did not allow black
  • people to eat in the same part of a restaurant as
    white people. Bus
  • drivers told black people to sit at the back of
    the bus or stand up for
  • white passengers. One day a woman named Rosa
    Parks got on a bus.
  • She was very tired. She did not want to go to
    the back of the bus. The
  • police took her to jail. This began the civil
    rights movement.
  • Martin Luther King was the leader of the civil
    rights movement. He
  • led protests in many states. In 1963 he walked
    with thousands of
  • people to Washington D.C. He gave a speech
    called, I Have a
  • Dream. Now we have a holiday that remembers
    Martin Luther King
  • every third Monday in January.

The Simple Past
  • Use the simple past to talk about actions,
    states, and situations in the past that are now
    finished.

Martin Luther King was the leader of the civil
rights movement.
Rosa Parks got on a bus.
Many people walked to Washington D.C.

  • Use the past tense of BE with adjectives and
    nouns (words for people, places or things).

Rosa Parks was very tired.
Many people were sad when Martin Luther King died.

  • The past tense of regular verbs is formed by
    adding d or ed to the base form of the verb.

The police arrested Martin Luther King many times.
Many people admired Martin Luther King.

  • Many past tense verbs are irregular. We dont
    add ed.

Martin Luther King gave a speech called, I Have
a Dream.
The speech became famous.

  • Use did not or didnt a base form verb to make
    the past tense negative.

Restaurant owners did not allow black people to
sit in the same part of a restaurant as white
people.
Black people didnt have the same rights as white
people.
