- Disciplines of the Deeper Life
2The Discipline of
Self Denial
3The Cult of Self
- (2 Tim 31-5) But mark this There will be
terrible times in the last days. People will be
having a form of godliness but denying its power
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God
Disobedient to their parents
ungrateful
unholy
unforgiving
slanderous
treacherous
lovers of themselves
lovers of money
boastful
proud
abusive
without love
without self-control
brutal
not lovers of the good
rash
conceited
Have nothing to do with them.
4The Cult of Self
- The Discipline
- of Denial Self
- The Call to the
- Denial of Self
Have nothing
to do with them.
5The Cult of Self
- The Discipline
- of Self Denial
- The Call to the
- Denial of Self
(Mat 1624-26) Jesus said to His disciples, "If
anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross and follow Me
(Mat 1624-26) What good will it be for a man if
he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?
Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
(Mat 1624-26) For whoever wants to save his
life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for
Me will find it
The
Denial
Self
6- The Discipline
- of Self Denial
- is the acknowledgement that
- 1) the Self brings Death and
- the Spirit brings Life
7- The Discipline
- of Self Denial
- is the acknowledgement that
- 2) the Self is in constant conflict with the
Spirit
8The Life of the Spirit
- (Gal 516-18) So I say, live by the Spirit, and
you will not gratify the desires of the sinful
nature.
Promise 1 The life of the Spirit kills the life
of the Flesh
9The Life of the Spirit
- (Gal 516-18) So I say, live by the Spirit, and
you will not gratify the desires of the sinful
nature. For the sinful nature desires what is
contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is
contrary to the sinful nature. They are in
conflict with each other, so that you do not do
what you want
10The Life of the Spirit
- (Gal 516-18) But if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under law.
Promise 2 The leading of the Spirit frees us
from the law of the Flesh
11The Life of the Spirit
- (Gal 519-23) The acts of the sinful nature are
obvious sexual immorality, impurity and
debauchery idolatry and witchcraft hatred,
discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish
ambition, dissensions, factions and envy
drunkenness, orgies, and the like
12The Life of the Spirit
- (Gal 519-23) I warn you, as I did before, that
those who live like this will not inherit the
kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law.
13The Life of the Spirit
Promise 3 The fruit of the Spirit cannot mingle
with the acts of the Flesh
14So What Do I Do?
(Gal 524) Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the sinful nature with its passions and
desires.
15So What Do I Do?
(Gal 220) I have been crucified with Christ and
I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The
life I live in the body, I live by faith in the
Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
(Gal 524) Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the sinful nature with its passions and
desires.
16So What Do I Do?
(Gal 220) I have been crucified with Christ and
I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The
life I live in the body, I live by faith in the
Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
(Gal 525) Since we live by the Spirit, let us
keep in step with the Spirit.
