• This passage speaks of being anointed and
  receiving the oil of gladness
• The olive tree was a major source of oil in the
  Old Testament times and is referred to throughout

• Israel was called "an olive tree, leafy and
  fair," because they shed light on all. Ancient
  Jewish Commentary on Jer. 1116

Olive trees

• Olive trees can produce olives for 40-50 years
• When they get old, branches must be trimmed
  leaving what appears to be a dead tree

• However, the next year new branches sprout and
  the tree begins to produce again.

Old Testament

• Psalm 128 compares Gods people to the small
  shoots and extensive root system of the olive
  tree, showing how Gods faithful will continue to
  exist and bear fruit

• Job compared people to live trees, noting that
  when an olive tree is cut, it comes back to life,
  but when a person dies he is gone

New Testament

• Pauls letter to the Romans speaks of the
  gentiles as being grafted on to the tree of Gods
  people

• Jesus is also referred to as a shoot and can
  understand that He is our branch

Getting the oil

• In Jesus time olive presses were used
• These consisted of a large mill stone being
  turned by an animal
• The pulp was then collected and placed under
  stones so the oil could be pressed out
