Nutrition Physical Activity Report Card 2009
FOOD SERVICE IMPROVEMENT PLAN 2009 To continue
to work with each elementary school to reduce
nutritional barriers that impact student
achievement by encouraging more students to eat
breakfast. School breakfast participation has
increased from 41 to 45 of ADA at Helmwood/VV
and from 39 to 40 of ADA at Morningside. Our
district goal is 50. KDE Nutrition and Health
Services will conduct a thorough review of our
district program in January 2009. The results of
this review will guide us in developing long-term
improvement plans. A recommendation will be made
to the Elizabethtown Board of Education to change
our program name from School Food Service to
Nutrition Services. This will support the
national and state professional association name
change and changes to be made to KDE
administrative regulations.
The data presented above is a summary from the
assessment of our physical activity environment.
Morningside hosted a Family Fun Night with an
emphasis on physical activity. Activities
included a guest speaker from a local fitness
center, aerobic activities for both students and
parents, tumbling activities conducted by a
gymnastics instructor, basketball and healthy
snacks. Helmwood students in Ms. Wyatts class
are doing a service project throughout the year
to focus on healthy food choices and physical
activity. The students will gather information
through videos, books and guest speakers. They
will then write and present commercials during
Hello Helmwood and prepare posters that will
grab the attention of their audience. .
The Elizabethtown schools are dedicated to
serving nutritious meals and to providing
multiple physical activity opportunities as a
means of helping our students reach
proficiency. Visit our website at

kitchens are HACCP compliant. Current scores are
100 for Helmwood and Morningside/TK and 98 at
EHS.

2School Breakfast The School Breakfast Program
(SBP) was established in 1966. School districts
receive federal reimbursement for each school
breakfast served that meets the U.S. Department
of Agricultures nutrition guidelines. Studies
show that children who participate in the School
Breakfast Program have significantly higher
standardized achievement test scores than
non-participants. Children with access to school
breakfast also had significantly reduced absence
and tardiness rates.
(2007/2008)
National School Lunch The National School Lunch
Program (NSLP) was conceived in 1946 as a
measure of national security to safeguard the
health and well-being of the Nations children.
School districts receive federal reimbursement
for each school lunch served that meets the
United States Department of Agriculture nutrition
guidelines. Federal regulations require minimum
portion sizes of meat, fruits and/or vegetables,
grains/breads and 8 oz. of milk. These
guidelines promote meal quality while commodity
donations assist the farmer and help schools keep
down meal prices. Lunch menus at the elementary
and middle school are planned on a three-week
cycle to include a variety of fruits, vegetables
and whole grains. Two entrée choices are
available daily. The two-week cycle menu for EHS
includes 4 entrée choices daily. Desserts are
offered on Friday. A la carte items are carefully
selected to meet current federal and state
guidelines. The Elizabethtown School Food
Service program does not contract with retail
establishments to provide meals. Students with
special dietary needs must have a doctors
statement on file with their school Cafeteria
Manager. (7CFR 15B) The following tables provide

A USDA study showed students who eat school meals
are more likely to consume milk, meats, grain
mixtures and vegetables compared to students who
did not, including students who brought meals
from home. Also, students who eat school meals
have higher intakes of some vitamins and
minerals, including calcium and Vitamin A --
nutrients that tend to be problem nutrients for
kids. Cost-wise, schools work very hard to make
sure that school meals are a good value. Take a
look at the number of items typically offered to
students at lunch. It takes a real balancing act
to beat that value with a bag lunch. --National
