Leaches Storm Petrels

• The Leaches Storm Petrel, unlike many birds,
  nests in burrows that can range from a couple
  feet to many meters long. They usually nest in
  fields and forests as seen at right. This is a
  picture of a petrel burrow dug under an old tree
  in the forest.
• The Students from the College of the Atlantic
  that work on petrels on Great Duck Island mostly
  base their work on a field near the the light
  station called The Petrel Patch.

Adult Storm Petrels

• Though you will tend to see the adults at night
  and not during the day, they are not nocturnal.
  They are actually far away out at sea catching
  food for their chicks and themselves.
• Adult Petrels have more feathers to cover up
  down (fluffy feathers that are under the main
  feathers),and they also grow much bigger.

Herring gulls

• Herring gulls are one of the main studies on the
  island.They tend to make their nests on the
  ground on rocky beaches.When they catch a clam or
  mussel they will fly into the air, and drop it on
  the rocks.

Guillemots

• Guillemots nest on and under rocks. They have 2
  chicks. Black Guillemots eat eels and fish.
• They are closely related to puffins.They dont
  really fly they just jump off cliffs and then
  flap their wings really hard and really fast,
  just long enough to get to the water.
