• Sedimentary rocks from when sediments are
  hardened by compression or compaction.
• Sediments can come from many sources, which is
  our first key to identifying the rock.

Step 1. What is the Compositional Source? (pg 114)

• Detrital- Made of rock fragments, mineral grains,
  or clays. (Think Sandstone)
• Biochemical- Made of the remains of organisms or
  tiny fragments of organic material. (Think coal)
• Chemical- Mineral crystals that were precipitated
  out of solution. (Think rock salt)

Step 2 Texture (pg. 113)

• Just like with Igneous rocks, texture is the
  characteristics of the grains that make up the
  rock.
• Texture of Detrital rocks is based on the size of
  the grains. There is an obvious difference
  between sandstone and mudstone.
• For chemical rocks, the texture is how large the
  crystals grew when they precipitated.

• Is it brittle or hard?
• How does it break? (think shale)
