Title: An Evolution in

1
  • An Evolution in
  • Book Identification
  • Simple Steps to ISBN -13
  • For Everybody

2
  • Step 1 Understand the basic nature of the ISBN
    change
  • The ISBN is the tool we use to identify books
  • in daily communications.
  • in business transactions.
  • with customers, co-workers and trading partners.
  • Changing the ISBN standard means we are changing
the way we label and identify books in daily
    communications and in business trade.

3
  • Step 2 Standards adoption is voluntary
  • There is no law or regulation requiring trading
    partners to adopt ISBN-13.
  • Each organisation must decide whether, when and
    how to adopt ISBN-13.
  • Organisations adopt standards because they
provide an efficient predefined way to transact
    business with trading partners.

4
  • Step 3 Readiness to adopt ISBN-13 will vary by
    trading partner
  • Early Adopters are ready now.
  • On Time Adopters ready by January 2007.
  • Delayed Adopters not ready by 2007.
  • Non Adopters not planning to change.

5
  • Step 4 10 Digit ISBNs are not going away
  • 10 Digit ISBNs exist on millions of books in
    print.
  • Substantial inventories of books with 10 digit
ISBNs exist in publisher warehouses and in the
    supply chain.
  • Many publishers have substantial supplies of
    unassigned 10 digit ISBNs.
  • Some publishers will continue to include 10 digit
ISBNs on new books until they are satisfied the
marketplace is able to handle 13 digits.

6
  • Step 5 There are standard rules for converting
    the ISBN-10 into ISBN-13
  • Begin with any 10 digit ISBN 123456789-0
  • Eliminate the check digit 123456789-
  • Add the prefix 978 978-123456789-
  • Calculate a new check digit 978-123456789-4
  • The ISBN-10 123456789-0
  • Converts to the ISBN-13 978-123456789-4

7
  • Step 6 Any ISBN-13 prefixed with 978 can be
    converted back to an ISBN-10
  • Any ISBN-13 prefixed with 978 978-123456789-4
  • Eliminate the check digit 978-123456789-
  • Drop the 978 123456789-
  • Compute a new check digit 123456789-0
  • The ISBN-13 978-123456789-4
  • Converts to the ISBN-10 123456789-0

8
1
  • Step 7 The new 13 digit ISBN already appears on
    books
  • The new ISBN is the13 digit number currently
displayed below and encoded within the Bookland
EAN-13 bar code. Its just not labelled as the
    ISBN.

?
9
  • Step 8 The numbering capacity of the ISBN
system is being expanded by introducing a new
    ISBN-EAN prefix
  • A new ISBN-EAN Prefix 979 will be introduced
    after January 1, 2007.
  • The core 9 digits following 978 will be used
with 979 and assigned to different publishers.
  • ISBN 978-123456789-0
  • ISBN 979-123456789-1
  • Publisher Prefixes will be different for 979
    ISBNs.

10
  • Step 9 It is not possible to convert an ISBN-13
beginning with 979 into a 10 digit ISBN
  • 10 digit ISBNs will not exist for 13 digit
    ISBNs beginning with 979.
  • Trading partners need to use 13 digits if they
    wish to handle these books.

11
  • Step 11 Book labelling prior to 2007
  • SSC and other book standard organisations
currently recommend displaying the ISBN-10 above
the Bookland bar code on the back cover of all
books published prior to January 2007.

?
ISBN 1-4028-9462-7
12
  • Step 12 Book labelling from 2007
  • SSC and other book standard organisations
recommend displaying the ISBN-13 above the
Bookland EAN-13 bar code on the back cover of
books published on or after January 1, 2007.

?
ISBN 978-1-4028-9462-6
13
  • Step 13 Not recommended but expect to see books
labelled with dual ISBNs as the industry makes
    the transition to ISBN-13

ISBN-10 1-4028-9462-7 ISBN-13 978-1-4028-9462-6
14
  • Step 14 The ISBN-13 is part of a larger family
of product identifiers under the EAN.UCC System
  • EAN EAN International
  • GTIN Global Trade Item Number
  • UCC Uniform Code Council
  • Any EAN.UCC system product identifier
  • Any EAN-14 is a GTIN - includes the ISBN-13
  • Any UCC-12 (aka UPC-12) is a GTIN

15
  • Step 15 The EAN.UCC rule for converting any
GTIN into the EAN/UCC-14 digit form is to
  • Right justify and left zero fill.
  • EAN/UCC-13 ( ISBN-13) 9781234567890.
  • EAN-13 as EAN/UCC-14 09781234567890.
  • UCC-12 (aka UPC-12) 121234567890.
  • UCC-12 as EAN/UCC-14 00121234567890.

16
  • Step 16 The Book Industry standards for EDI
    will change
  • Original BISAC fixed formats are inflexible and
    will not be updated.
  • BISAC fixed format users must upgrade to
  • ONIX and Other XML standards as they are defined.
  • ASC X12 or EDIFACT - allows transmission of Book
    Identifiers as ISBN-10, ISBN-13 (EAN-13) or
    EAN/UCC-14, separately or simultaneously.

17
  • Step 17 Develop an ISBN-13 Implementation
    Strategy for your Organisation
  • Identify where ISBNs are used.
  • Determine where business processes need to
    change.
  • Introduce capability to handle ISBN-13, along
with all other EAN-13s and GTIN where applicable.
  • Retain capability to handle ISBN-10.

18
  • Step 18 Work with your employees, system
providers, book suppliers, libraries and industry
    organizations to
  • Inform and educate employees, suppliers, and
    customers about the change.
  • Phase In use of ISBN-13.
  • Phase Out use of ISBN-10.
  • Produce or capture appropriate metadata.
  • Develop a method of receiving and sending
    metadata ONIX recommended.
