Why Learn/Why Bother?
  • Why learn another set of tools?
  • Blogs and their associated technologies are
    arguably heralding the most significant
technological development in online teaching and
learning since the introduction of enterprise
    level Learning Management Systems (LMS)

  • RSS - Believe it or not a poll by The RSS Weblog
asking "How many feeds do you track?" responses
ranged from 0-20 to over 390. The very survey
found that 40 of voters track over 100 feeds and
12 track over 390 feeds. Information overload?!

What is a Blog?
  • Define A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but
occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based
    publication consisting primarily of periodic
    articles (normally in reverse chronological
order). Although most early weblogs were manually
updated, tools to automate the maintenance of
such sites made them accessible to a much larger
population, and the use of some sort of
browser-based software is now a typical aspect of
    "blogging". (http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog)
    Good source for tutorial!
  • Purpose Post public information for others to
    read and entice to respond.

7
Blog Poll
  • Who is currently hosting a personal Blog?

Yes
No

What is a Wiki?
  • Define A wiki (pronounced , or see
Pronunciation below) is a web application that
allows users to add content, as on an Internet
forum, but also allows anyone to edit the
content. Wiki also refers to the collaborative
software used to create such a website (see Wiki
    software). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIKI
  • Purpose Allow multiple users to rapidly edit,
post, and read in a shared online format.

9
Wiki Poll
  • Who has contributed to a Wiki?

Yes
No

What is a Feed?
  • Define RSS is a family of XML file formats for
web syndication used by news websites and
weblogs. They are used to provide items
containing short descriptions of web content
together with a link to the full version of the
content. This information is delivered as an XML
file called RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS
    channel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_Feed
  • Define A news aggregator is a software
application or remotely hosted service that
    collects syndicated content from disparate
sources and provides a single consolidated view.
These applications can also be commonly referred
to as a feed reader, feed aggregator or simply
    just an aggregator. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_Feed
    _Reader
  • Purpose Although the technology itself is
complicated it allows information to come to user
instead of users going out and searching for
    information. Widely used in podcasting,
    vodcasting, broadasting, screencasting, Vloging,
    and MP3 blogs.
