- UTPA is the 10th largest university in the state
and the fifth largest in the UT System. - The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education lists
UTPA among its top 100 best U.S. colleges for
Hispanics. - UTPA is second in the nation in the number of
bachelors degrees, eighth in the number of
masters degrees awarded to Hispanics. - The rankings for the number of bachelor's degrees
awarded to Hispanics at UTPA by academic program
are as follows (Hispanic Outlook 2005) - ranked 1st in English Literature

- Hispanic Engineering Science and Technology Week
(HESTEC) a nationally recognized effort to
steer minorities into hi-tech jobs attracts
30,000 students, teachers and families to campus
yearly. - The UTPA Mariachi has been recognized by the
Texas House of Representatives and the Texas
Senate for promoting the music and traditions of
the Hispanic culture. - Since 1998 more than 500 computer science and
engineering graduates have been placed in
permanent jobs with Fortune 500 companies. - Ninety percent of students in the UTPA Law School
Preparation Institute who have applied to law
school have been accepted to at least one. - Sixty-one percent of UTPA students who apply to
medical schools are accepted as compared to the
state average of 37 percent. - Students enrolled in the Baylor premedical honors
program at UTPA receive conditional admission to
medical school and 85 percent are admitted upon
graduation.
