poster competition in El Paso TX that featured
all UT system schools and five colleges from New
    York.
  • Our Mini Baja team participated in the Mini Baja
2010 competition (April 8th-11th) in Greenville,
South Carolina sponsored by the Society of
    Automotive Engineers (SAE).  The competition
    attracted schools from different countries
including the U.S., Brazil, Canada, and Mexico.
Of approximately 110 schools that competed,
    UTPAs Potro placed 15th overall.
  • UTPAs Human Powered Bronco placed third in two
categories at the (ASME) 2010 Human Powered
Vehicle Challenge East, in New Britain, Conn.
from May 7-9. Overall UTPAs HPV team placed 5th
    in the Utility class division.

New ME Department Policy
  • To be able to better serve you
  • Multiple sections of Thermo I Solids w/
    Tutoring
  • We are implementing a 2-peat policy
  • You get 2 free shots to pass an MECE course
  • To be able to take a course for the 3rd time
  • You must petition the faculty
  • Take and pass a remediation course
  • To be fully implemented in Summer 2011
  • If you dont pass by the second time it may be
better for you to consider a different career
    path we will help
  • Plus, we simply do not have the resources to
teach you the same course three times

33
New UTPA GPA Policy
  • http//assist.utpa.edu/
  • Announcements - New Academic Record Changes
  • Repeating a Course
  • The policy regarding repeating a course(s)
applies only to those completed/repeated at The
University of Texas-Pan American. Transfer grades
will not replace a grade earned at UTPA for the
purpose of raising a students grade point
average. This policy has been in place since Fall
    2009.
  • Will I lose my transfer credit?
  • Transfer work will not be taken away, however,
it will no longer be used in the calculation of
any GPA requirement. Transfer work will not be
used to repeat a course taken at UTPA for the
purpose of raising a students GPA. Transfer
credit will be applied to meet prerequisites and
    course requirements for your degree.

34
New UTPA Language Policy
  • Degree plans 2008-9 or later that have the 43
    hour core
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign
language in one of the following ways
  • High school transcripts showing two full years
of coursework in a foreign language
  • Take two semesters (6 credit hours) of college
level coursework in a foreign language
  • Get 6 hours equivalent credit through an AP,
CLEP, or soon to be available local exam

Engineering Education Innovation
  • Change the way we teach
  • Challenge Based Instruction (CBI)
  • Teaching backwards
  • Problem/Challenge first, supporting theory
    second
  • Inquiry based
  • Goal is to develop Adaptive Expertise
  • The ability to apply knowledge outside of the
context in which it was learned (Knowledge
    Innovation)
