Title: The Art of Teaching

1
The Art of Teaching
  • Presented by Najhi Terrell

2
Introduction
  • Teachers who inspire, realize there will always
be rocks in the road. Teachers can be either
stumbling blocks or stepping stones for students
it all depends on how you look at it. The main
contrast between good teachers and great teachers
is that great teachers have mastered the art of
teaching people things they didnt know they
    needed to learn.

3
Outstanding Teachers
  • Prepared
  • Form good relationships
  • Wonderful sense of amusement

4
Being Prepared
  • Clear, written-out objectives
  • Organization
  • Teachers with objectives use facts as a starting
    point
  • Look at all sides
  • Encourage students to predict what will happen
    next
  • Lesson plans that gives students a clear and
    structured idea
  • Consistent in returning the work in a timely
    manner
  • In their classrooms early and ready to teach

5
Form Good Relationships
  • Warm-hearted
  • Motivational
  • Positive
  • Accessible
  • Know the problems their carrying
  • Believe and push them to always be and do more

6
Wonderful Sense of Amusement
  • Essential ingredient for the best of teachers
  • Can release some pressure from working to much
  • Always cheerful

7
  • The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher
explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The
    great teacher inspires.
  • By William Arthur Ward
  • Learning is a matter of intensity not elapsed
    time.
  • By Tom Peters

8
Three Things Every Great Teacher Does
  • Build Relationships
  • Make difficult concepts seem easy
  • Make your students feel like geniuses

9
A Childs Perspective vs. A Teachers Perspective
  • A child might say teachers are mean because they
dont let you have your freedom. An example,
teachers insist that students hand in their
assignments on time or they will take off points
for later assignments. Teachers hold the
    students responsible for his/her actions.
Teachers dont allow free time to students until
    work is completed.
  • Mean Making Excellence A Necessity!
  • Another teacher who is already had experience
might give a few ideas on helping them.
  • Examples
  • Interact with the child
  • Give affection to the pupils
  • Teach outside of the textbook and balance with
    theory
  • Make a commitment on your part
  • Encourage good performance
  • Accommodate the needs of the students
  • Make yourself available

10
The ABCs for First Year Teachers
  • Admit your mistakes -- and learn from them.
  • Be firm but flexible.
  • Communicate with parents.
  • Develop a homework policy -- and stick to it.
  • Empower your students don't just lecture to
    them.
  • Find time to attend after-school events.
  • Get to know all the teachers in your school and
make friends with the cooks, custodians, aides,
    and secretaries.
  • Have the courage to try something else if what
    you're doing isn't working.
  • Institute a clear discipline policy -- and
    enforce it consistently.
  • Just listen -- both to what the kids are saying
and to what they're not saying.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Learn your school's policies and procedures.
  • Model desired attitudes and behavior.
  • Non Carborundum Ignorami. (Don't let the
    imbeciles wear you down.)
  • O- Over plan.
  • Prepare interesting lessons.
  • Quit worrying and just do your best.
  • Remember that you teach students first, then you
teach whatever academic discipline you learned.
  • Stay alert.

Conclusion
  • Award-winning teachers are very prepared yet
flexible, having a sense of humor, and form
strong relationships with students. Above all, I
think the one thing that sets them apart is the
desire to see those they teach become successful
and be willing to have compassion and diversity
of lifes experience and interests. A philosopher
once said, The best teachers teach from the
heart, not the book. This is how you tell a
superior teacher from a pleasant teacher.
