Overview of the J-1 Process
  • All J-1 visa holders are called Exchange Visitors
  • All Exchange Visitors need a DS-2019
  • Request DS-2019 from OIS and send to EV
  • EV uses DS-2019 to apply for J-1 Visa
  • EV enters U.S. with J-1 Visa and DS-2019
  • Visits OIS w/in 48 hours of arrival on campus
  • OIS MUST be notified if EV will arrive after
    Program Begin Date
  • OIS is available for advice, travel endorsements,
    extensions, etc. during J-1s stay

DS-2019 Application
  • Please allow OIS the requested 3 week processing
    time
  • Internal Requisition of 150 for NEW and TRANSFER
    DS-2019 only
  • 75 correction fee to re-issue DS-2019
  • Funding verified by department 18,000/yr. for
    J-1, 7000/yr. for spouse, 3500/yr. per child
  • USC/government funding???

DS-2019 Application cont
  • All 3 signatures are required
  • Previous time in J-1 status is very important
  • Please provide at least one e-mail address for
    the Exchange Visitor
  • Please provide an e-mail address for the dept.
    contact and sponsoring faculty member
  • Department of State now requires each dependents
    city of birth

Extension of Stay
  • NO CHARGE for extension
  • Extension process is very similar to DS-2019
    application
  • Be sure to include desired end date
  • Please secure all 3 signatures
  • We also need updated funding and local address
  • OIS can extend up to maximum length of stay

J-1 Visa Application
  • Local U.S. Embassy is best source of information
  • Required documents include Visa application,
    DS-2019, proof of funding, ties to home country
  • Dept. of State advises to allow at least 4 weeks
  • Direct EVs to OIS website and www.unitedstatesvis
    as.gov
  • J-1 Visa vs. J-1 Status

Arrival and Validation
  • It is imperative that OIS be notified if J-1 will
    enter after the program start date on DS-2019
  • All J-1s MUST be validated once they arrive
  • J-1s MUST report to OIS w/in 48 hrs. of arrival
    on campus
  • J-1 can be out of status and forced to leave
  • Please have J-1 complete the Permanent Record
    form and make copies of Passport, Visa, I-94
    card, and DS-2019
  • Students complete passport verification and
    scholars meet with Dr. Johnson or Judy Hartwich

J-1 Transfers
  • 150 fee, signatures, etc. required to transfer
    in an Exchange Visitor
  • Release Date is very important
  • Length of Stay does not start over
  • Transfer EVs must also be validated
  • Previous SEVIS ID (N000_ _ _ _ _ _ _) required

Travel
  • Please have DS-2019 signed before leaving U.S.
  • Travel endorsements are valid for re-entry 6
    months into the future
  • Some EVs will be subject to Special Registration
    and must check in and out of the U.S.
  • Visas cannot be renewed inside the U.S.
  • Automatic Revalidation - DO NOT surrender the
    I-94 card

2-Year Home Residence Requirement and Waivers
  • Requires EV to return home for an aggregate of 2
    yrs. before returning as PR, H-1B, or L-1
  • EV subject based on funding, Skills List, or
    medical training
  • Cannot change status in U.S. w/o a waiver
  • EV are eligible to leave and re-enter as B1/B2
    for tourism/business or as F-1 Students
  • OIS offers very limited assistance with the
    waiver process. Dept. of State is best resource

Going Home
  • OIS must be notified if an EV is leaving more
    than 30 days before program end date on DS-2019
  • All J-1s have a 30 day grace period after the
    program end date
  • Re-entry to the U.S. is not allowed during this
    period
