The Biopac System

• Allows recording and analysis of electrical
  signals. Well use it to record voltage changes
  generated by electrical signals from neurons
  muscles.
• The display plots voltage against time and
  allows for several channels of data to be
  recorded.
• Calculated variables can be saved during
  recording.
• Signals can be analysed to extract desired values
  after recording.

Workshop sessions

• You will need to save data, bring a floppy disk
  or pen drive.
• Dont bring food or drink with you
• Do turn up (on time).

Recording Procedure

• Read through the lesson
• Youll be working as a group, each member needs
  to have their own copy of the data, and each
  group should hand in different data.
• Procedure
• Attach the recording disks
• Start Biopac by double clicking the icon for the
  relevant workshop.
• Enter a name, the data is saved under this name.
• Calibrate
• Record, the experimenter needs to tell the
  participant what to do, and may need to enter
  labels (by pressing f9) into the record to
  identify what happened when.

Analysis procedure

• Open a data file
• Set up the measurement boxes to obtain the values
  you want

Analysis

• Identify the right parts of the record with the
  I-beam cursor.
• Use the magnifying glass tool to zoom in, if
  needed. The Autoscale Waveforms and Autoscale
  Horizontal options on the Display menu reset the
  vertical and horizontal scales respectively. You
  can also click on the axes to manually set the
  scale to use.
• Paste values into the journal (making sure it is
  clear what they are). Select Journal/paste
  measurements from the edit menu. You can add text
  to help you make sense of the values.

What do I need

• From each workshop session you need
• A copy of the graph window
• A copy of your journal
• Both need to be pasted at the end of the record
  sheet for that workshop. The journal should
  contain the values you need to fill in the tables
  on the report sheet.
• On the Edit menu select either Data Window/Copy
  Graph or Journal/Copy to paste the graph or
  journal into the windows clipboard
