PIRATA (Pilot Research moored Array in the
Tropical Atlantic) (1997-2006)
International (tripartite) Programme (CLImatic
VARiability) - USA (NOAA/PMEL) - FRANCE (IRD,
Météo-France) - BRESIL (INPE, DHN)
In France Label Observatoire de Recherche

Research Ministry (gt funding helps for three
years)

PIRATA Principal source of fixed points
profiles, constitutes a indispensable complement
to VOS networks, SVP et ARGO

10Very first conclusions
- Period with no PIRATA shows an immediate
- impact on forecast, especially between 100-400m
- Impact of Salinity assimilation is important
- On year run suggests a relative seasonal impact
- NEXT
- - (try to) define a strategy for future moorings
or - additional sensors on the actual PIRATA network
- - what is the relative impact of PIRATA
compared - to drifting ARGO floats in the tropical domain.
11Dedicated cruises (replacement of mooorings,
sensors recovering high frequency data - 1mn /
10mn-)
- 12 french cruises 6 brazilian cruises
- (next one in July 2004)
12Vessel time rare, difficult to get and
expensive! gt Important to optimize the
cruises..

14Current moorings
- BAD NEWS and BIG PROBLEMS
- 10W and 0E / Equator ATLAS buoys already
vandalized!!! (on May 8 and 15) - Vessel time problems in France
