Title: A story
1A story
Once upon a time there was a husband whose task
it was to cut off four inches of the shank bone
of the ham his wife wished to cook for their
Sunday meal. This job was repeated frequently,
for they both like ham. One day, out of
curiosity, he asked his wife why she wanted the
bone shortened. She could not give an answer
except that her father had always done this for
her mother's hams and she continued to respect
the practice. They agreed to ask her mother to
explain the reason on her next visit. The mother
replied, after considerable thought, that she
didn't know either but her mother had set the
example. The grandmother was to be a guest the
following week. When asked about the hams, she
said. "Your grandfather loved baked ham, but he
was too thrifty to buy me a second pan large
enough for the whole ham, so I had to have him
cut off the bone so that it would fit into the
one small pan I had."
