Title: The Elements of a Story

1
The Elements of a Story
  • Much like a chef baking a cake, an author needs
the right ingredients to write a good story.
Should one ingredient be left out, the result
    will be unappetizing.

2
The important ingredients (elements) of a story
are
3
Character-
  • is the person or people in the story. There can
be main/major characters around whom the story
revolves or supporting/minor characters who are
    less important.

4
Setting-
  • is the location of the story is when (time) and
    where (place) the story occurs.

5
Plot-
  • is the series of events or actions that happen in
a story. A plot is made up of many important
    parts

6
Plot-
  • Introduction/Exposition-the beginning of the
story where the character, setting, and conflict
    are introduced.

Once upon a time..
7
Plot-
  • Conflict-the struggle between two opposing forces
that drives the story forward. Without a
    conflict, there is no story.

External-the conflict between the character and
an outside force
Man vs. Man Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society
Internal-the conflict within the character
himself.
8
Plot-
  • Rising Action-these are the events that develop
the conflict and lead to the climax of the story.
    Tension builds.

9
Plot-
  • Climax-the point of highest tension in the story.
After it occurs, the events lead to the end of
the story and the resolution of the conflict.

10
Plot-
  • Falling Action-these are any events after the
climax occurs that lead to the end of the story.

11
Plot-
  • Conclusion/Conflict Resolution-this is where all
the loose ends are wrapped up, questions are
    answered, or secrets revealed.

And they lived happily ever after..
12
Theme-
And the moral of the story is..
  • is the central idea the author most wants the
reader to understand about the story. It is
    usually not stated directly.

13
Mood-
  • is the feeling that the author creates with
choice of words. It is what the reader feels.

14
Point of View-
is the perspective from which the author chose
to tell his/her story.
First Person (I, me, my) The story is told by a
character in the story.
Third Person Objective The story is told by an
outside person and not a character in the story.
The reader doesnt know what the characters are
thinking or feeling.
Omniscient An outsider (not a charcter) tells
the story. This narrator is all-seeing and
all-knowing.
