- The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is
responsible for confining federal offenders in
prisons and community-based facilities. As of
August 2009, the BOP housed 171,291 inmates in
118 BOP institutions at 93 locations. In
addition, the BOP housed 35,956 inmates in
privately managed, contracted, or other
facilities.
