1
The beginning of a New Nation
  • The Shot Heard Round the World

2
Causes
  • We were at a crossroad in Colonial History
  • Britain was determined that the colonies were
    going to pay their way
  • Taxes were inevitable
  • There was to be no representation in the
    Parliament for the Colonies
  • The Declaratory Act established the fact that the
colonies were subservient to the Crown

  • The Boston Massacre was a call to arms
  • The Boston Tea Party was proof that the colonist
were going to even more extremes than before
  • The Sons of Liberty were getting bolder in their
    actions
  • The more outward the attacks the harder England
    fought back.

  • The Committees of Correspondence were making
clear the various problems that each colony was
    encountering
  • When England passed the Intolerable or Coercive
acts against the people of Massachusetts Bay
Colony for their part in the Boston Tea party it
was clear that a decision had to be made
  • It was time for the Colonies to make a decision
that would forever change the way they were to
    live

First Continental Congress
  • The First Continental Congress met in
Philadelphia Pa in the fall of 1774 after being
called to meet by the Committees of
    Correspondence
  • 12 of the 13 Colonies met to try and come up with
a plan to deal with the Intolerable acts
  • Georgia was the lone Colony not to be represented

9
  • New York and Pennsylvania came to the congress
with instructions to seek peace at all cost
  • Patrick Henry and others remained in heated
debate that violence was the only solution
  • The final outcome was a mixed bag at best
  • Continue the Boycott of British goods.
  • Advising the colonies to start forming their
    militias to prepare for war.
  • Drafted a set of 10 resolutions entitled the
Declaration of Rights to be sent to the King

10
  • Throughout the fall of 1774 and into the spring
of 1775 Boston and Mass Bay Colony continued to
suffer as a result of the Intolerable Acts
  • In April 1775, it all comes to a head in
    Lexington and Concord Mass.

11
  • Concord had been storing guns, Powder and
    Ammunition in its warehouses
  • Concord was chosen because it was away from
Boston the center point of the British Army
  • Was felt that someplace this far from Boston
would be safer and take longer for British troops
to get to it and since it would take some time
they would be discovered if they did attempt to
    find it

12
April 18/19 1774
  • The British Army out of Boston set out for
Concord in boats hoping to sneak into the area
down the Charles river just East of Lexington
  • There they took to the road toward Lexington and
    Concord
  • They had already been discovered when they left
Boston and riders were waiting for them seeing
    them offload their boats

  • The road to Lexington and Concord was narrow and
lined on the sides with short stone walls
  • Troops had to march the narrow road in fairly
    close quarters
  • In the early hours of April 19, 1775 the British
regulars met the Lexington Militia outside of
Buckman Tavern on the Green in Lexington

17
  • The intent was not to start a war
  • They intended to show the troops that they
objected to their presence and displeasure of the
troops in violating their rights as British
    subjects
  • 79 men stood on the green in the early hours on
the morning of April 19th 1775
  • By Daybreak those men would become some of the
first casualties of the American Revolution

18
  • A single and evoked shot rang out from behind a
stone wall. "The shot that was heard round the
world", is still unknown from which musket, or
which side the shot came from, either way The
Shot will be Heard Round the World
  • The British killed eight minutemen, and wounded
nine others. The war has begun
  • The American Revolution starts on this day and
will continue for several years to come.
