Introduction
  • Print-cen-trism n. 1. The belief in the inherent
superiority of print. 2. A tendency to view
other formats in terms of print. Print-cen-tric
    adj.
  • This is the story of how one library is
struggling to get outside the box and integrate
    electronic resources

3
Cancellation of Print
  • What happens when you cancel over 600 print
    titles at once?
  • What issues came up?
  • Communication was important.

4
The Scale Is Tipping
  • Reduction of print check-in as we cancel print
    subscriptions
  • Periodical reading room affected
  • Binding notices the changes
  • The mailroom slows down

5
Symptoms Of Change
  • Better card maintenance
  • PRR inventoried their holdings
  • Bind Prep is able to work on their
    backlogged/problem titles
  • The mailroom has less mail

6
Tiresome Symptoms
  • PRR noticed titles that have been suspended
  • Bind Prep began requesting replacement issues
    needed to complete their work
  • Items get bound too quickly

7
The Scale Has Tipped
  • The old has not been completed but the new has
    begun.

8
What This Means
  • Eventually, less work for some staff members
  • New opportunities

9
Less Work
  • Less print check-in
  • No need for a student supervisor
  • Less to sort, shelve, and bind
  • Some day less print to claim, replace, have
change titles and maybe to order

10
New Opportunities
  • What are you going to do with the savings?
  • Will you plan for it or let opportunity slip by?

Opportunities Considered
