2A little History
- Footbag is a modern American sport. It was
invented in 1972 in Oregon City, Oregon, when
John Stalberger met Mike Marshall, who had been
kicking around a hand-made bean bag. John had
recently had knee surgery and was looking for a
way to work on his flexibility, and he instantly
took to the game and become good friends with
Marshall. They called the game, "Hack the Sack." - Stalberger and Marshall soon became enthralled
with the game, which Marshall had been hoping to
promote with the general public. The two designed
a product, which they trademarked the "Hacky
Sack", and began putting together a plan to
market the product and the sport. At the same
time, they decided to create a "generic" term for
the sport itself, as opposed to their product,
and they named the sport "footbag". - Tragically, Mike Marshall died of a heart attack
in 1975, at only 28 years of age. Stalberger,
determined to realize their vision of footbag as
a sport, continued to promote the product and the
game. He formed the National Hacky Sack
Association along with the help of many others.
He ultimately sold the rights for the Hacky Sack
footbag to Kransco (operating under the Wham-O
label), which also manufactered the Frisbee
flying disc. - In the years following the creation of the Hacky
Sack product, many footbag enthusiasts began
sprouting up around the world, and a sport was
born.
3Footbag is a sport!!!
- Footbag ,as an organized sport, is governed by
the International Footbag Players Association, a
non-profit organization. There are a substantial
number of footbag tournaments and festivals each
year. Competitive footbag is governed by the
International Footbag Committee (IFC), which
publishes the official Rules of Footbag Sports
- Footbag is plenty of fun, a great
cardiovascular work out, improves - your foot-eye coordination, it forces you
to use both sides of your body, teaches you
balance skills, timing and rhythm. Footbag can be
played just for fun or in a competitive format,
also it is great for both team and non team
personalities. - In Tajikistan this game is called lanka. This
is a little different from footbag. It will be
made from lead and skin of animals. Interesting
isnt so?
But these games have the main thing in
common every person let he be baby, chairman,
pupil or oldman he can play this game if he
wants. It can be played everywhere in the
street, yard, lawn, bus stop, office, etc.
4Styles of Footbag
- Footbag Freestyle is the artistic form of the
sport. It can be a flurry of difficult moves the
eye can hardly follow, or it can be smooth and
flowing, as if in slow motion. This variety makes
freestyle competitions very difficult to judge.
To simplify the task, competitors are judged
along four dimensions choreography, difficulty,
variety, and execution. - Footbag Golf - Instead of a club you use your
foot. Your driver bag is hard and your putter bag
is soft. Holes are 18 inches around and 18 inches
off the ground. - Circle kick is the more common version of
footbag, and it is the game people are referring
to when they talk about "hacking the sack" (or
any other variant on the term "hacky sack"). In
this game, players stand in a circle, do tricks
with the footbag, and keep it moving around the
circle. A 'hack' is achieved when every person in
the circle contributes a kick
- There are 5 styles
- Footbag Net is a singles or doubles court game,
like tennis or volleyball, where players use only
their feet to kick the footbag over a
five-foot-high net. The rules for doubles net are
a lot like volleyball players are allowed three
kicks per side, and must alternate kicks. In
singles, however, players are only allowed two
kicks per side. The footbag ) may not contact a
player's body except below the knee. Footbag Net
combines the court strategy of tennis with the
set-and-spike strategy of volleyball. Players
frequently spike the footbag over the net, using
either the sole of the foot, a sweeping inside
kick, or an outside push. Even more remarkable
than the spikes are the "digs" players use to
defend against the spikes. Players also block
spikes in the air with amazing foot-to-foot
battles over the net.
5Rules of Footbag
- There are no rules per se, it is more
etiquette - 1. Not allowed to say your sorry - because
gravity always wins. - 2. You don't use your hands - if you can
touch with your hands you can also kick it. You
have more reach with your feet than your hands. - 3. When the Footbag does hit the ground,
you don't serve the bag to yourself to start up
again. Always give a courtesy toss to one of your
fellow players.4.Not allowed to spit, insult or
offend. - The scoring in footbag is made up of
points called "adds" these adds are
awarded for a variety of different things such
as a delay (stall), a dex (circling the bag),
body (ducking the bag, jumping, or spinning),
cross body, or unusual surface. Through these
different "adds" all of footbag's tricks can be
described.
6Why should we play footbag?
- Footbag not only unites the
individuals within the kicking circle, but also
symbolically links all the races and nations
within the universal impulse to kick a ball.
Kicking around a small, round object (a rock, an
animal bladder, a sock, a rotten orange...) must
surely be one of the oldest forms of human sport.
It seems that practically every culture, from
ancient history to modern times, has adapted some
kind of home-grown variation on the foot-ball
theme (takraw, shuttlecock, kemari, etc.).
Commonly played on street corners, plazas and
campuses around the country, footbag finds its
unique impetus not from the quest to "win", but
from the sheer joy of dancing together in a
circle and working toward a common goal. When
everyone touches it before it falls, the entire
group wins. In this simple way, footbag compels
groups of disparate individuals to set aside
their separate, ego-driven minds and behave, for
a moment, with a cooperative worldview. This is
what makes footbag so special.
- The fun and teamwork that is inherent in this
game makes footbag by far the best game ever
invented. It is truly beautiful in its
simplicity. In the circle game (which is how most
of us were introduced to it in the first place)
everyone is invited to play no matter the skill
level, and everyone is automatically on the same
team If I am "hacking" in a circle, I will try
to stand next to any beginner to help pick up
their shanks. I think this is the big factor in
the popularity of the game. It is simple. You
attempt to use what initially is a foreign part
of your anatomy to keep a small bean bag from
hitting the ground. Your circle becomes as many
other people as the bag can hypnotize.... I feel
that our efforts as pros have been mostly to take
the game beyond these simple beginnings. I think
that the game speaks for itself.
7The best game in the world!!!
- It's a great thing that totally different
people can come together in the pure joy of just
kicking a little bag. I think that footbag boosts
the human spirit and creates a feeling of
camaraderie and friendship among any group of
people.
8A footbag is a masterpiece!!!It's a little round
bean bag but it is perfectly round, a certain
weight, and a certain softness.
9Just try it!!!
- We made our own footbag.
- Our footbag symbolizes the friendship
- of two countries USA and Tajikistan.
- There are symbols of our countries on it
- . It was made of atlas (our national fabric)
- and 13 stars ( the number of first American
- states). It was not easy to play footbag.
- We trained 3-4 days to kick it. Its so small
- and bouncing!!! But we got it!!!
