Title: What is it Foot bag

1
What is it Foot bag?
  • Footbag" is a cooperative kicking sport (with
roots in ancient China, Thailand, Native America,
et al.) which was reinvented in the 70's by two
athlete dudes from Oregon, John Stalberger and
Mike Marshall. Patented, sold and popularized
under the (then Wham-O) trade name of "Hacky
Sack", the sport of footbag continued to slowly
grow in popularity through the 80's and now in
the 90's, is recognizable throughout most of
North America. Millions of people, young and old,
athletes and "couch potatoes", have now kicked it
around at least once and many thousands have been
    fully smitten.
  • Footbag not only unites the individuals within
the kicking circle, but also symbolically links
all the races and nations within the universal
impulse to kick a ball. Kicking around a small,
round object (a rock, an animal bladder, a sock,
a rotten orange...) must surely be one of the
oldest forms of human sport. It seems that
practically every culture, from ancient history
to modern times, has adapted some kind of
home-grown variation on the foot-ball theme
(takraw, shuttlecock, kemari, etc.). Of course,
modern day soccer is widely recognized as the
    planet's single most popular sport.

2
But footbag is not just another sport..
  • Commonly played on street corners, plazas and
campuses around the country, footbag finds its
unique impetus not from the quest to "win", but
from the sheer joy of dancing together in a
circle and working toward a common goal. When
everyone touches it before it falls, the entire
group wins. In this simple way, footbag compels
groups of disparate individuals to set aside
their separate, ego-driven minds and behave, for
a moment, with a cooperative worldview. This is
    what makes footbag so special.

3
Basic moves of foot bag.
  • These are the four basic moves of footbag. In
order to improve your skills, follow these two
    simple steps
  • (1) REPETITION - Practice each move until you can
    get multiple hacks with it.
  • (2) VARIATION - Begin combining the different
    moves.
  • Inside kick, outside kick, toe kick, knee.

Kinds of footbag
  • A footbag is a small bean bag or sand bag used as
a ball in a number of sports and games. It is
typically controlled by the feet, but in some
sports every part of the body except the hands
and arms may be used. The term footbag is also
the generic name for the sports which use the
footbag. The main varieties are footbag
freestyle, footbag net, and circle kick. Both the
footbag and the sports that use it are sometimes
referred to as hacky sack (or hackey sack).
  • Footbag freestyle is a footbag sport where
players demonstrate their abilities by performing
sequences of difficult moves. The performance is
judged for choreography, difficulty, variety, and
    execution .
  • In footbag net, players (either playing for
themselves, or with a partner) move a footbag
back and forth across a five-foot-high net. This
game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and
    volleyball. Specifically, the court dimensions
and layout are similar to those of bandminton
the scoring is similar to old scoring system in
volleyball (you must be serving to score) and
serves must be diagonal, as in tennis. Footbag
net games can be played to eleven or fifteen
points, although the winners must win by at least
    two points.
  • Circle kick
  • Circle kick is the more common version of
footbag, and it is the game people are referring
to when they talk about "hacking the sack" (or
any other variant on the term "hacky sack"). In
this game, players stand in a circle, do tricks
with the footbag, and keep it moving around the
circle. A 'hack' is achieved when every person in
    the circle contributes a kick.

5
The rules of Foot bag
  • No Hands , No Arms
  • Always serve the bag to someone else,
  • Do not bogart that bag Don't always hog it
'till you drop it because that sucks for
everybody else. Being able to pass well is
important to almost all footbag games.
  • Don't say "sorry". Everyone makes mistakes,
especially when learning, so sorries are
    unneccissary.
  • Try not to give knee passes Passes from the knee
tend to go strait to the ground.

6
What people think about foot bag
  • "...I have been playing footbag for almost 17
years and the themes of peace and understanding
are ones my friends and I share. Additionally I
have been a scout leader for 5 years and very
much appreciate your sharing information to help
my young Cubscouts. This is a sport that is very
important to me. You see I was in an accident 4
years ago and lost the use of my legs for 18
months. Hacky was an integral part of my recovery
after many surgeries and PT. I am very fortunate
to have my best friend be a physical therapist
and to have him see the benifits, both physical
and mental, of incorporating the sport into my
ongoing recovery. Also, as a parent I feel within
my rights to say your mom would be proud! Take
    care." -- Rod

"It's a great thing that totally different people
can come together in the pure joy of just kicking
a little bag. I think that footbag boosts the
human spirit and creates a feeling of comraderie
and friendship among any group of people." -- Ben
Hefferon, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
