  • New Zealand is the first country in the world
    to establish an entire education field that
    formally recognises indigenous knowledge.

  • There are more than a dozen Maori qualifications
    and 600 unit standards that are registered on
    the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and
    'housed' in field Maori.
  • Field Maori is one of the 17 fields registered on
    the Framework. It caters specifically for Maori
    pedagogy, knowledge and skills. This field cover
    a diverse range of areas that reflects the
    growing demand by industry, Maori communities and
    educators for formal recognition of Maori skills
    and knowledge.

  • Level 2 - (60 credits)
  • This qualification recognises the competence,
    knowledge, and skills required for cooking
    routine food dishes in whare kai. It is awarded
    to ringa wera who are able to demonstrate a range
    of basic cookery and a limited range of
    preparation techniques, using food items that may
    have already undergone a level of preparation,
    perhaps by someone else, and/or maybe a
    proprietary product. This would be in accordance
    with the application of tikanga on marae.

    knowledge to minimise wastage handle and

    equipment, cutlery, crockery, and glassware
    practise food safety methods awhi and manaaki

    areas serve food to tables and also will have
    demonstrated literacy skills.
  • This qualification will enable ringa wera to
    pathway to the National Certificate in
    Hospitality (Basic Cookery) (Level 3).

  • A CDRom featuring all support materials, units of
    work, assessment schedules, student information
    sheets, etc, in Field Maori, is available for
    Hauora, Maori Business and Management, Mau Rakau,
    Nga Mahi a Te Whare Pora, Putaiao, Reo Maori, Te
    Waharoa, and Whakairo.

  • Unit Standard Mau Rakau Level 1 4. This
    video/DVD resource is intended as a guideline for
    performance assessment of Mau Rakau unit
    standards.
  • The sample performances in the video/DVD are
    quality examples of the standard required to
    demonstrate competency of the Mau Rakau unit
    standards.
  • Each demonstration shows the minimum required
    number of stances for each unit standard. The
    stances as shown are executed with the required
    degree of competency. This is the expected level
    of performance competency for the Mau Rakau unit
    standards, taking into account iwi variation,
    kawa, and tikanga.
