Freshman Year is Important!!
  • Research suggests that students that do not do
well in 9th grade really struggle to graduate
within 5 years. It is important that you all do
your best and that we work hard together for you
    to meet with success.

8
How to Succeed at FHS??
  • Simply put you will find success here if you
    have good
  • attendance (limit your tardies and absences), you
    try your
  • best, and if and when you get stuck you ask for
    help!
  • I find it boils down to three areas
  • ATTENDANCE, ATTITUDE, and ADVOCACY

9
ATTENDANCE
  • I have all the faith in the world in the faculty
here, but they struggle to educate empty chairs.
Be here and be here on time! There is a direct
correlation between good attendance and good
    grades.

10
ATTITUDE
  • When you are in school, in class, on the athletic
field, on stage, etc, you TRY YOUR BEST.
Approach challenges with a positive attitude.
Attitude is everything and everything is
attitude! Be respectful to others and to
    yourself.

11
ADVOCACY
  • Sadly, there may be times when you are going to
make poor choices. When you find yourself making
mistakes, when you get stuck, ASK FOR HELP.
  • Will there be consequences for bad behavior?
Usually, but all the people in this building are
here because we want to help kids. With me
especially, being truthful will always be a
    better choice.

12
Research also suggests that students involved in
school-sponsored activities are more likely to
meet with success. This is my first challenge
to each of you! I am asking that you each join
a club, get involved in student government, play
a sport, or get involved with Drama, etc.. It
does not matter what you choose to do, as long as
it is something beyond the school day.
GET INVOLVED!!

  • Music Devices
  • Attendance
  • Credits
  • Bullying/Fighting
  • Online Social
    Networks
  • Dress Code
  • Communication
  • Hats

17
Cell Phones
  • Cell phones must be turned off and not visible
during the school day. Incoming and outgoing
phone calls of an emergency nature will take
place in medical or in the respective grade
offices. In the event a parent/guardian needs to
contact their child, they should call the childs
    grade office directly.
  • 1st Offense Grade Office keeps phone until 155
  • 2nd Offense Grade Office keeps phone until 155
    the next school day
  • 3rd Offense Grade Office keeps phone until 155
the next school day. At that time, a
    parent/guardian may pick it up.

    Handbook

18
Music Devices
  • Not appropriate in the classroom
  • If someone is talking to you, turn it off and
    take the ear buds out
  • If your cell phone is where your music is stored,
you cannot use it during the school day. It will
get confiscated if it is visible.

    Handbook

19
Attendance
  • School Attendance On your 5th tardy and all
subsequent tardies, (excused or unexcused) you
    are assigned a Saturday school.
  • Classroom Attendance If you are absent (excused
or unexcused) from a full year class 20 or more
times or a half year class 10 or more times you
are only eligible to receive ½ credit in the
    class.

    Handbook

20
Credits
  • Freshmen must pass a total of 5 credits if they
are to move on to sophomore year.

21
Bullying/Fighting
  • We do not tolerate this here and we do not do
    this here.
  • If you get into a fight, you will receive a
minimum consequence of a suspension, you risk
being arrested, and you could be long-term
    suspended.
  • If someone is bothering you, walk away and find
    an adult.

22
Online Social Networks
  • Facebook/MySpace
  • Pictures/eligibility
  • Texting and messages online
  • Anything you write in a post, any picture you
post, anything you text, ANYTHING you do
electronically can and too often does become
    PUBLIC for others to view.
  • When you communicate this way, you lose control
of the things you say and the things that are
posted about you. This can be very dangerous and
can have negative consequences here at school.
    BE CAREFUL!

23
Dress Code
  • Clothing may not expose the midriff, navel, nor
    show any cleavage.
  • Accessories that could reasonably be considered
detrimental to student health and safety (chains,
sharp objects, etc) are not permitted in school.

illustrations of a profane nature, sexual
    connotation, violence, or suggestive statement
relating to drugs, alcohol or any illegal

    Parent Handbook

25
Communication
  • If you are confronted by an adult in the
building, BE COOPERATIVE! Try your best to be
    courteous!
  • If you are asked your name, make sure you give
    it!
  • Not giving your name and/or not being cooperative
is not a good decision and will lead to
    consequences from the grade office.
  • We are a big school. It is important that
students are courteous and cooperative with each
other and ALL the adults in the building for our
school to be a safe and comfortable place to
    learn!

26
