Summary

• Doesnt require Hard Disk Installation
• All that is needed is a bootable CD
• Creates file system and directory structure in a
  RAM Disk and creates Symbolic Links to files or
  directories
• Does not need to access Disk drive
• Although not essential, lots of RAM is beneficial
• 2Gb of programs on CD using on the fly
  decompression
• Based on Debian 3.2 Dist. using Linux Kernel 2.4
• Automatically detects most hardware
• If you want it can access disk drive
• For HD installation
• To access local files
• For Users home directory

• For instant gratification and de-gratification
• For demonstrating Linux features
• For learning about Linux
• As a Rescue System for other Linux or other
  operating systems
• For quick access to included Linux programs

OK Now What

• Much of it is easy to use, it sets itself up in a
  way that should be easy to access files, and
  programs
• If you need access to root you need to set a
  password for root first
• su root
• passwd
• Has Help and extensive manuals

Gotchas

• CD Burning
• Cant take Knoppix CD out of drive. I have two CD
  drives on one of my machines, so the standard GUI
  CD burner software is fine.
• There are work arounds, using text mode and no
  GUI. But for CD copying either requires large
  amounts of RAM, or access to local FAT drive
• Mounted NTFS are only read only. FAT is RW
• When gotchas occur check with Knoppix website,
  and search for the problem. Or use Google for
  more general problems. Linux community has lots
  of info.
