So What is with the Penguin?
  • His name is Tux, and he is the
  • Knoppix mascot.
  • Linus Torvalds, the creator of Tux was
  • asked what he envisioned for a mascot.
  • His answer was You should be imagining a
slightly overweight penguin, sitting down after
having gorged itself, and having just burped.
Its sitting there with a beautiful smile-the
world is a good place to be when you have just
eaten a few gallons of raw fish and you can feel
    another burp coming.

Introduction To Knoppix
  • Like many great ideas, Knoppix was born out of
    rather humble beginnings.
  • When Klaus Knoppix began experimenting with Linux
rescue disks he picked up at computer expos, he
realized that if he put his favorite Linux
software on a rescue CD, he could boot it and get
to work no matter what computer he was in front
    of.
  • Five years later, Knoppix is world-renowned as
one of the most flexible and useful live CDs.
  • A live CD is one where the operating system boots
and runs completely from the CD most Linux
distributions require you to install them to your
hard drive to run.) Whether you want to try Linux
for the first time, repair computer problems, or
    perform systems administration tasks, Knoppix
squeezes all of the tools you need onto a single
    CD-ROM.

4
Introduction Cont.
  • So how does Knoppix work? When the CD boots, it
automatically configures your hardware and sets
    everything up in memory.
  • Various clever hardware detection scripts on the
CD let it work with a wide range of systems.
  • Thanks to on-the-fly decompression, the CD
contains over two gigabytes of software,
including a full office suite, Web browsers,
e-mail clients, and even games. All of the
software runs from the CD-ROM, so your hard drive
is left untouched. When you are finished, you can
reboot back into your normal system as if nothing
    had happened.

5
Introduction Cont.
  • Knoppix also makes a great rescue CD. Used as a
Linux rescue disk, it lets you restore your boot
loader to your master boot record, back up hard
drives, and repair file systems. It even makes a
great Microsoft Windows recovery CD, as you can
read and write to all the major Windows file
systems, including FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. As a
Windows recovery CD, it can restore corrupted
system files, back up documents and settings,
scan the system for viruses, and even edit the
    Windows Registry.

6
Differences between Knoppix and Windows
  • Can be modified among programmers
  • Virtually virus free
  • Free alternative to Windows

7
How it is similar to DOS
  • One of the main programs in Knoppix is The
Shell. This is comparable to Microsoft DOS.
  • This interface allows users to type in commands
    and programs.
  • Programs and commands can be run with the click
    of a mouse.

8
Booting Knoppix
  • When your Knoppix CD is ready, put it into your
CD-ROM drive and reboot. Most computers are set
to boot from a CD before the hard drive, but if
yours isn't, go into the BIOS to change the boot
device order. When the desktop finishes loading,
you'll see that it is similar to a Windows
    desktop in many ways.
  • The K icon in the bottom left corner of the
screen is like the Start button click on it to
see all of the software you can use. It's hard to
believe just how much fits on the one CD. When
you're done, click the K icon and select Logout
    to exit Knoppix.
  • Knoppix has something to offer every computer
user, regardless of your experience. So whether
you've been meaning to try out Linux or you are a
Linux expert looking for a great new tool,
Knoppix is definitely worth checking out.
