Hawaii- A Volcanic Hot Spot

Hawaii- A volcanic Hot Spot where weakness in the
earths crust lets lava up to the surface. Hawaii
has approx. 107 volcanoes altogether, active or
not.
Location- where is Hawaii? Hawaii and
its islands are located in the centre of the
pacific ocean, 20 north of the equator.

How was Hawaii made? All of the Islands of Hawaii
have been made by volcanic eruptions of basalt
rock.

What is a hot spot? A hot spot is a weakness in
the earths crust that forces lava up to the
surface.
What and where is Kilauea? Kilauea is in the
south of Hawaii's main island. It is a huge
volcano that is very active, that started
erupting in 1983.It is not dangerous, unless you
get in the way of its lava flow.
The Kilauea eruption The eruption started on the
3rd January 1983 , that produces basalt. When it
first came, no-one was worried, but it burnt down
many houses, at a top speed of 40kph, and the
volcano produces enough lava to go round the
world 50 times. It is so hot it can burn tarmac
and set wooden houses on fire.

How have people been affected by the eruption of
Kilauea since 1983? When the eruption occurred,
It was unexpected, so naturally people did not
panic. But when the lava reached their house,
they fled, and watched their house burn to the
ground. The lava reached kalapana gardens, which
is now under more than 20m of rock. The locals
now consider this normal. When the lava reaches
their house they run, there is no way to stop it!

How does the U.S geological service monitor
Kilauea? The experts do it by taking samples of
rock, from an opening in the lava crust, where
they can see the lava flow. They take a piece of
metal attached to string and throw it in the lava
and out again, giving you a great lump of basalt
rock, which they study to find out what the
volcano is going to do next, saving hundreds of
lives.
Conclusion
It is unusual for Hawaii to have volcanoes
because it was made from multiple volcanoes.
There are two types of volcanoes, active, and non
active. The volcanoes there are not too dangerous
because everyone knows where the lava flow is
heading, and the do not explode, they only run
lava in a stream.
