Doubting Thomas

We live in a world filled with doubt
We wont believe until we see and touch

Many people today doubt their beliefs and believe
there doubts
This seems to be a complete contradiction to the
word we all to often use to describe people in
the church, Believers or people of faith

Lets look at Thomas
He was hand picked by Jesus and given some
awesome power Matt 101-4
What do you think Thomas was feeling at this
time? Joy, Excitement, Fear

It was not uncommon for a great teacher to take
under his wing a few young man and teach them
his wisdom.
But Jesus went a step further and asked these men
to leave all they had and follow him, to eat,
walk, live with everyday.

All of us have had people come into our lives for
a short period of time yet we learned so much
from that person
This happened to Thomas

Thomas is mentioned six times in the
bible Matt101-4, Jn1116, Jn145 Jn2024-29
Jn212, Acts1-2
The Jews are wanting to kill Jesus Jn1033, 39
Then Jesus gets word that his friend Lazarus is
very sick Jn11

Now we have Jesus and his disciples together the
night before Jesus is to be crucified Jn141-5
Three years with Jesus and Thomas is still
struggling
But hes not the only one Jn148

Its been said Either you define the moment or
the moment will define you
Thomas defining moment became a moment when
history would both define and judge him

When Jesus first appeared to his disciples in
the upper room after his resurrection Thomas was
not there Jn2024
Look at what he missed Jn2019-22

Its been said half of success is just showing up
This has never been more true then in a
Christians life, there is no substitute for just
being available for God to work through you

What if David had not showed up and offered to
face the giant? What if Noah had something
better to do then build the ark? What if Jesus
said I'm to busy? There is no substitute for
disciplining yourself to be faithful to be
there ready for God to work through you.

Can you picture the scene in the upper room
Everyone excited and full of joy and Thomas said
I need to see and touch
We call this man the doubting Thomas yet we
live in a world that requires study after study,
survey after survey and when given all the
information we still doubt

Two things come to mind when I think of why we
doubt so much.
Humanity Failures Men and women prove themselves
unworthy of trust everyday, scandals in polities,
unethical business deals, cheating spouses, etc
Sins by-product With all this lies and deceits
it is hard to believe or completely trust anyone

Yet everyday God calls us to believe in something
we can not see or touch
Look at what happens when Jesus comes to the
upper room again Jn2026-29
Jesus could have rebuked Thomas yet he shows him
love

Hab24 The just shall live by faith
The next time we see Thomas is in Jn212
Lets look at Acts 1-2

Rom 117
Thomas had to learn the same lesson that we all
have to learn, It takes faith to please God
History tells us that Thomas went on to be a
great follower of Jesus, he was the first to take
the gospel to India were history says he was
killed for preaching the gospel.
