Space for a Garden
  • Determine how much space you have to plant.
  • How much exposure do you have to the sun.
  • Is it accessible for the children to plant and
    water.

What will I Grow?
  • Some plants can be grown
  • Inside herbs, cactus, house plants and grass.
  • Some seedlings or sprouts can be grown in the
    dark.
  • Outside peppers, sunflowers, pumpkins, carrots,
    strawberries and lettuce.
  • (needs direct sunlight)

How will it grow?One seed per plant
  • Root plants Under the ground where the children
    will not see it and can be surprised when it is
    produced! Each one needs space in-between for
    growing usually about
  • 2 to 4.
  • On top Such as lettuce, cauliflower, onion and
    broccoli, thin out as seedlings grow to one or
    two plants per foot.

How will it grow?One seed per plant
  • Up on the vine Peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, peas
    cucumbers, and green beans, all will grow about 2
    to 3 feet up. (needs cage or trellis)
  • Across the Ground Squash, such as pumpkin and
    melons, will grow 4 to 8 feet in length. It can
    be trained back into a smaller area but needs
    room for each fruit or vegetable to grow.

  • Garden Soil, potting mix, amended soil or
    compost
  • Gloves
  • Tools- rake, shovel, hoe, hand rake and trowel
    (small hand shovel)
  • Containers Large or small
  • Watering can or hose
  • Seeds (let the children decide what to plant)

Activity Sock Heads
  • Steps
  • 1. Put seeds at the bottom of sock
  • 2. Fill sock with dirt
  • 3. Push dirt down and tie off sock
  • 4. String button and pipe cleaner
  • 5. Place into sock
  • 6. Put in shallow plate or bowl
  • 7. Water
