Journal Assignment
  • Keep a daily journal. A journal is a daily
    record, as of occurrences, experiences, or
    observations.
  • Write (1) student number, (2) name, and (3) class
    number on top of paper.
  • Date each journal entry. Be sure to include day
    of the week. Example Monday, February 21,
    2005.

  • Write your feelings about or reactions to
    something that happened EACH day of the week.
  • Write whatever comes to your mind. Dont worry
    about spelling, punctuation, or grammar. I will
    read it but wont correct it.
  • Write a minimum of 5 sentences EVERY DAY.

  • If more than one page, staple pages together.
  • As you enter class, put your journal into
    container at front of class. If you are late to
    class, I will not accept journal.
  • You will be graded on writing at least the
    minimum 5 sentences each day.
  • Journals will be returned weekly.
  • There is no need to use a new piece of paper each
    day. Just write the new date and continue
    writing your journal on the same sheet of paper.

What is the value of writing a journal?
  • Forces you to think in English.
  • You can see your own progress.
  • Youll enjoy going back and reading it.
  • It will link you to your children and
    grandchildren.

Hand out debate note cards
  • When taking notes on debate, use small card and
    write only key words.
  • SHOW CARD TO TEACHER BEFORE BEGINNING DEBATE.

Debate Rules
  • Stop speaking when timer rings.
  • Four pro people, four con people.
  • Pro team picks topic out of hat.
  • Prepare for 5 minutes.
  • Prepare as a team.
  • Use 10.5cm X 7.5cm paper for notes (no written
    paragraphs).
  • Open debate Anyone talks but only 1 person at a
    time talks about their position (pro or con)
    asks another question makes a statement.
  • SPEAK ONLY ENGLISH!

To begin debate
  • Divide into pro and con teams.
  • After 5 min. prep time, find a spot and begin
    debate when teacher gives signal.
