Title: Welcome from ONTARIO POWER GENERATION

1
Welcome! fromONTARIO POWER GENERATION
Technical Meeting on Integration of Analog and
Digital IC Systems in Hybrid Main Control Rooms
  • Rick Hohendorf
  • Computers and Control Design

2
Ontario Power Generation
  • 12 CANDU power reactors
  • Pickering A 4 x 500 MWe
  • Pickering B 4 x 500 MWe
  • Darlington 4 x 875 MWe
  • Designed and put into service over a 25 year
    period
  • Different designs/technology vintage

3
Ontario Power Generation
  • One of OPGs stations is performing well with a
high capacity factor and is moving to a 3-year
    outage cycle
  • The other two stations are only part-way through
their plans for improving their performance

4
Ontario Power Generation
  • Pickering A has been through a life extension for
2 Units and the remaining 2 Units are out of
    service permanently Safe Store
  • On Pickering A, we have replaced the control
    computers that control the reactor
  • We also upgraded the main control room operator
interface 20 years ago and are about to do it
    again

5
Ontario Power Generation
  • Darlington is one of the most highly digital
    plants in operation
  • Control computers, both shutdown systems, fuel
    handling computers, common processes computer
  • Many other systems contain microprocessor-based
    technology
  • More than 1300 PLCs in safety-related and balance
    of plant applications
  • Plant information system

6
Ontario Power Generation
  • Life extension studies are currently underway for
    both Pickering B and Darlington
  • The process for New Build has also been initiated
    for the Darlington site

7
Areas of Current Work
  • Day-to-day operations and aging management
    responsibilities for the reactor control
computers at the 12 Units also control rooms
  • S/W Program (including safety critical s/w), HFE
Program, process control analysis and h/w
    engineering
  • Design support for fuel handling s/w, TRF, site
security systems, and reactor maintenance tools
    (CIGAR)

8
Areas of Current Work
  • Currently about 15 projects underway aging
    management of various computer-based plant
monitoring and control systems and control room
functions plus the addition of supplementary
    information management systems
  • Newly arising issues of cyber security and
    knowledge management
