CORBA vs HLA
  • What is HLA?
  • CORBA vs HLA
  • Conclusion

3
What is HLA (High Level
Architecture)?
  • Is a standard framework that supports simulations
    composed of different simulations.
  • Developed by the Defense Modelling and Simulation
    Office of Department of Defense.
  • A simulation which is implemented as part of an
HLA-compliant simulation, it is referred as a
    federate.
  • Consists of three components
  • Federation Rules
  • Interface Specification
  • Object Model Template

4
What is HLA?
  • Federation rules
  • Ensure Proper Interaction of simulation in a
    federation
  • Define the simulation and federate
    responsibilities
  • Interface Specification
  • Defines Run Time Infrastructure(RTI) services.
  • Identifies callback functions each federation
    must provide
  • Object Model Template
  • Provides a common method for recording
    information
  • Establishes the format of key models
  • Federation Object Model (FOM)-introduces all
    shared information
  • Simulation Object Model (SOM)-describes salient
    features of a federate.
  • Management Object Model (MOM)-identifies objects
and interactions used to manage a federation.

5
CORBA vs HLA
  • CORBA is a framework for distributed
applications.Where as in HLA is a framework for
    distributed simulations.
  • CORBA guarantees interoperability.Where as in HLA
the responsibility of interoperability depends on
    the languages specified in RTI.
  • HLA is more robust infrastructure as compared to
    CORBA.
  • CORBA provides specific protocols IIOP(Inter Orb
Protocol.).Where as HLA leaves this decision to
    RTI.

6
Conclusion
  • HLA would be the best choice for legacy
    simulations.
  • CORBA would be the best choice in situations
where legacy databases used for middleware
    creation.
  • ( link http//www-ece2.engr.ucf.edu/ofa/repor
    t1.htm. )
  • My Conclusion
  • CORBA would be best for VLAB, we will not have to
through the hassle of making one simulation
    compliant with another(federate)
  • The interoperability in HLA depends on the
    language specifications in RTI.
