UAB Extramural Funding
  • UAB has an annual budget of 1.8 billion.
  • Since 1969, UABs extramural funding has doubled
    every decade.
  • As of June 1, 2006, extramural funding totals
    more than 361 million.
  • For FY 2004, UAB ranks 20th in NIH awards to
    domestic institutions of higher education.

UAB Economic Impact
  • The economic impact of UAB on the surrounding
    community reached a record high of 2.9 billion
    for FY 2003.
  • UABs impact on the state reached 3.2 billion in
    2003, up from 2.7 billion.

UAB Economic Impact
  • As the largest employer in the metropolitan area,
    UAB and UAB-related sectors generated 52,924
    full-time equivalent jobs.
  • 8 out of every 100 jobs in the Birmingham area,
    and 2.8 of every 100 jobs in the state are
    related to UAB.
  • UAB generates approximately 1.14 billion worth
    of local income.

UAB
  • UABs buildings provide 8.6 million square feet
    of assignable space.
  • The Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research
    Building was dedicated on April 3, 2006.
  • The 12-story facility, with 323,000 square feet
    of research and office space, was built at a cost
    of 100 million.
  • It increases the amount of research space for UAB
    by approximately 25.

Centers
  • There are currently 101 centers formally approved
    by the UA Board of Trustees.
  • There is an active reinvestment effort for the 16
    designated UWIRCs.
  • Three additional centers hold pilot status.
  • In 2004/2005, UAB committed over 4.5 million for
    UWIRC support.

Pilot Funding
  • Through its Centers and affiliated relationships,
    UAB provides pilot funding opportunities for the
    development of junior investigators.
  • Approximately 100 awards are made each year in 33
    separate funding programs.
  • The annual total of awards is conservatively
    estimated at 3 million.

  • As evidence of its collaborative spirit, UAB
    currently holds NIH funding for
  • 9 P01 Research Program Projects
  • 1 P20 Exploratory Grants
  • 11 P30 Center Core grants
  • 5 P50 Specialized Center grants
  • 2 P60 Comprehensive Center grants

SPORE grants
  • NCIs Specialized Programs of Research Excellence
    (SPOREs) promote interdisciplinary research and
    move basic research findings from the laboratory
    to clinical settings
  • UAB holds 4 SPORE grants (funded through P20 and
    P60 mechanisms).
  • Only 3 other institutions have more.

Research
  • In addition, UAB holds a total of 60 active
    Cooperative Agreements (U awards) including
  • 38 U01 Research Projects
  • 8 U10 Cooperative Clinical Research
  • 2 U54 Specialized Centers
  • 1 Exploratory Grant
  • 1 UC6 construction award in support of the
    Southeast Biocontainment Laboratory.

Training
  • As of 5/9/06, UAB has 28 T32 grants, two K12
    awards and a K30 Clinical Research Curriculum
    Development Award.
  • Individual career development (K) awards have
    risen from 27 in 1999 to 49 in 2006.

School of Medicine
  • The SOM has ranked in the top 25 in NIH research
    funding for more than 30 years.
  • As of June 1, 2006 the School had 2,058 funded
    grants and contracts, which represented over 242
    million in peer-reviewed research .
  • In FY 2004, the SOM ranked 18th in NIH funding.
