consult additional, outside sources or stray from
the time period mentioned in the question set
use footnotes when citing your sources. An
instruction sheet on proper citation style is

website you may also consult the Chicago Manual
of Style.
4TIPS ON THE MIDTERM
1. Follow the directions. 2. Be sure your answer
addresses all parts of the question, but doesnt
go beyond the question. (Stay away from
opinion.) 3. Avoid using the first person
(I). 4. Avoid using we or our when talking
about the United States.

5. Stay within the time frame posed by the
question. - dont bring up 20th century
topics - avoid phrases like throughout history
and from the dawn of time 6. Be sure to use
at least three examples to back up your
argument. 7. Mention specifics in your
introduction which examples will you discuss to
prove your point?
6TIPS ON THE MIDTERM
8. Limit the number of direct quotations you use.
Make mention of the course readings and lectures
in the text and in the footnotes, but dont waste
space with a lot of direct quotations. 9. A
paragraph should have at least three
sentences. 10. ENSCHEW OBFUSCATION! Write how
you talk, then go back and make sure you have
complete sentences. Dont go nuts with an
academic vocabulary or writing style.
