21
ATM Network Outages1/2/2006 1/3/2006
  • Multiple outages
  • Included Total ATM Loss of Connectivity out of
    SOCC
  • Subset of customers impacted more than others
  • Multiple Problems Suspected
  • Medium level of comfort problems solved

Our Comfort level that we fixed the problem is
getting much higher! (Just in time to turn down
ATM ?)
22
Total Internet Connectivity Failure March 7,
2006 458-549 AM
  • We were making changes to bring redundancy to the
Ohio Public Library Network (OPLIN) and we cause
    a routing problem
  • Occurred during the maintenance window, which
is why we do major changes then ?

23
Total Internet Connectivity Failure March 28,
2006 446-537 AM
  • We were turning down an router that we thought
was unused. Turned out it was key to our
internet connectivity since it was the source
of our routing announcements to the Internet.
  • 446 AM to 450 AM  (4 minutes) due to the ATM
    Card problem.
  • 512 AM to 537 AM (25 minutes) due to the static
    routes being removed.
  • Occurred during the maintenance window, which
is why we do major changes then ?

24
King and Queen
  • Redundant Main entrance Firewalls (Checkpoint
FW-1 on Nokia Hardware) for OIT Enterprise
    Computing Services and Secured Hosting
  • Older Firewalls (Circa 2000)
  • A few short outages have occurred in the past
    quarter
  • Short Term Requires rebuilding the firewall to
    increase swap memory
  • Long Term Requires replacing the Firewalls to
keep up with expected future load

25
  • Contracts Update
  • Denise Freshley

26
Contract Management
  • Newer Ethernet Contracts
  • Time Warner Telecom
  • ATT (formerly SBC)
  • CSME (Customized Metro Switched Ethernet)
  • Gigaman (SOMACS Amend. 28)

27
Highlights of Contracts
  • Generally the same pricing
  • Different geography covered
  • Cleveland only OPT-E-MAN available with ATT
    (no CSME)
  • Need quotation from both vendors if they both
    cover the area
  • Potential Gotcha ICB costs

28
Ethernet Costs TWTC ATT CSME
  • 10 Mbps 1st Port 710
  • 2nd Port per location 425
  • 3rd Port per location 285
  • 100 Mbps 1st Port 1385
  • 2nd Port per location 830
  • 3rd Port per location 830
  • ATT is waiving standard installation costs
    unless build-out needed

29
Other Dedicated Transport Contracts
  • SOMACS
  • TWTC
  • ATT Legacy
  • SBC Legacy

30
Other Dedicated Transport Contracts (Continued)
  • SOMACS
  • Expires 6/30/07
  • TWTC
  • Expires 6/30/07
  • Will probably renew under new MSA
  • ATT Legacy
  • Expires 6/30/07
  • Will probably renew under new MSA
  • SBC Legacy
  • Expires 6/30/07
  • Will probably renew under new MSA

31
Other Dedicated Transport Contracts (Continued)
  • T-1s negotiate to retain 400 pricing with all
    current vendors
  • DS-3s under ATT Legacy contract
  • Negotiate to retain pricing current pricing
    structure
  • Within 50 miles of ATT POP 2300
  • Over 50 miles of ATT POP 3600
  • OCns Negotiating for metro and long-haul

32
New Contract Structure
  • Master Service Agreement
  • General Terms and Conditions
  • Little flexibility for modifications (Section 11)
  • Service Attachments
  • Service-specific terms and conditions
  • SLA language
  • Pricing Schedules
  • Plan is to move all vendors to new structure on
    or before new biennium

33
We need welcome your suggestions! Contacts
  • Data Orders
  • Lou Pieper 4-5204
  • Voice Orders
  • Debbie Farmer 4-5206
  • Contract Manager
  • R. Denise Freshly 6-6060

34
  • Ethernet
  • Services

35
Ethernet Services
  • Really just like a local ethernet (with more
    delay)
  • Very easy to install and manage
  • Low cost end points (Switches with Ethernet ports
vs. Routers with Telco transport ports
  • Higher Total Cost but much higher bandwidth so a
    lower cost per bandwidth

36
OIT Service Idea
  • OIT buys shared GEs at Rhodes and SOCC from
    carrier
  • Customer buys the remote end OIT services (less
than if you bought the Rhodes and/or SOCC end)
  • Pretty early in the design let us know if you
are interested and we could design the service
    around you!

37
OIT Current Ethernet Services
  • Same service between Rhodes (and other building
on Capitol Fiber Downtown) and SOCC
  • Priced very competitive for 10 Mbps (750 total
for both ends vs. 1410 ) and you get better
    redundancy with OIT
  • Priced a little uncompetitive for 100 Mbps Today
(3,450 vs. 2,770) but you get better redundancy
    with OIT
  • Priced sillily uncompetitive for 1 Gbps Today
(30,450 vs. ICBs in the 2,000-3,000 range) we
think we add value, but we dont add 28,000 of
    extra value ?

38
