Title: PERT GANTT CPM

1
PERTGANTTCPM
  • Project Planning Toolkit

2
Previous steps
  • Clear and detailed understanding of
  • The tasks involved
  • The estimated time each task will take
  • The dependencies between those tasks
  • Sequence in which those tasks have to performed
  • The projects information must be assembled in a
    certain way.
  • Project planning process

3
Project Planning Process
  • Set the projects start date
  • Set the projects end date
  • Select the projects methodology or project life
    cycle

4
Project Planning Process
  • Determine the scope of the project in terms of
the phases of the selected project methodology or
    life cycle.
  • Select the projects review methods.

5
Project Planning Process
  • Identify any predetermined milestone or other
critical dates which must be met.
  • List tasks, by project phase, in the order in
    which they might be accomplished

6
Project Planning Process
  • Estimate the personnel necessary to accomplish
    each task.
  • Estimate the available personnel to accomplish
    each task.
  • Determine the necessary skill level

7
Project Planning Process
  • Determine task dependencies
  • Which tasks can be done in parallel
  • Which tasks require the completion of other
    tasks before they can start

8
Project Planning Process
  • Determine project control or review points.
  • Perform project cost estimation and cost-benefit
    analysis.

9
Work Breakdown Structures(WBS)
10
WBS
  • Hierarchic decomposition or breakdown of a
project or major activity into successive levels,
in which each level is a finer breakdown of the
    preceding one.

11
WBS
  • Document outline
  • Each item is numbered consecutively
  • 10 20 30 40 50
  • Each item at the next level is numbered within
the number of its parent item
  • 10.1 10.2 10.3 10.4

12
WBS
Tasks
  • 1.0 Project Initiation
  • 1.1 Draft project plan
  • 2.0 Analysis phase
  • 2.1 Plan user interviews
  • 2.2 Schedule user interviews
  • 3.0 Examination and Test
  • 4.0 Design
  • 5.0 Test
  • 6.0 Implementation
  • 7.0 Post-implementation review

13
Task
  • A task should be manageable.
  • The expected results can be easily identified
  • Success, failure or completion of the task can be
    easily ascertained
  • The time to complete the task can be easily
    estimated
  • The resource requirements of the task can be
    easily determined

14
GANTTcharts
15
GANTT Charts
  • Matrix
  • Lists on the vertical axis all the tasks to be
    performed
  • Each row contains a single task identification
which usually consists of a number and a name

16
GANTT Charts
  • The horizontal axis is headed by columns
indicating estimated task duration, skill level
needed to perform the task, and the name of the
person assigned to the task, followed by one
column for each period of the projects duration
  • Each period may be expressed in hours, days,
weeks, months or other time units.
  • In some cases it may be necessary to label the
period columns as Period 1, Period 2, etc.

17
GANTT Charts
  • The graphic portion of the chart consists of a
horizontal bar for each task connecting the
period start and period ending columns.
  • Variants include a lower chart with personnel
allocation on a person-by-person basis (shows
    slack time).

18
PERTProgram Evaluation and Review Technique
19
PERT
  • Program evaluation and review technique (PERT)
    charts depict
  • task
  • duration
  • dependency

20
PERT
  • Each chart starts with an initiation node from
which the first task, or tasks, originate. The
other end of the task line is determined by
    another node.

CPMCritical Path Method
23
CPM
  • Similar to PERT charts and are sometimes known as
    PERT/CPM.
  • A critical path consists of a set of dependent
tasks which together take the longest time to
    complete.
  • Although not normally done, a CPM chart can
    define multiple, equally critical paths.

24
CPM
  • The critical tasks are highlighted.
  • The critical path should receive special
    attention.
  • Project progress
