Delft Blue and jenever

Delft Blue.

• Delftware, or Delft pottery, is blue and white
  pottery made in and around Delft in the
  Netherlands.
• During the Dutch Golden Age, ( 17th century) the
  Dutch imported millions of pieces of Chinese
  porcelain in the early 1600s. Only the rich could
  afford it, so Dutch people began to imitate it.
• Delft Blue is still produced, but if you buy a
  souvenir, take care, because very often it says
  Made in Taiwan.

Jenever

• Jenever (in England known as Holland gin), is the
  juniper-flavored and strongly alcoholic
  traditional liquor of the Netherlands.
• It was first sold as a medicine in the late 16th
  century. In the 17th century it became more
  popular for its flavour.
• Traditional jenever is still very popular in the
  Netherlands.
• There are two types of jenever "Oude" (Old) and
  "Jonge" (Young). This is not a matter of aging,
  but of distilling techniques.

Why orange?

• William of Orange, the father of the country
  was a nobleman and considered as the founder of a
  new Dutch state.
• William was born in 1533 at Dillenburg Castle (in
  Germany). He inherited the principality of Orange
  (in France) in 1544 and could call himself
  Prince.
• The familyname of our Royal Family is Van
  Oranje, which means From Orange.

• "Muisjes" are a kind of sprinkles and are
  slightly anise-flavoured and are put on a piece
  of buttered Dutch Rusk or "Biscuit".
• These "treats" are served to the family and
  guests when they visit the mother and newly
  arrived baby.
• Pink and white for a new-born girl and blue and
  white for a new-born boy.

• Farmers and labourers wore wooden shoes, but also
  poor people in the cities
• Thanks to the natural ventilation of wood, wooden
  shoes are cool in summer and warm in winter.
• Wooden shoes are safe. Feet are protected on all
  sides.
• Wooden shoes are cheap.Nowadays wooden shoes
  are manufactured mainly for tourists.

• A treat on the fifth of December. In Holland we
  celebrate Sint Nicolaas of Sinterklaas.
• There are special speculaaspoppen for people
  who become 50 years old. An Abraham for men and
  a Sarah for women.

• There are so many windmills because we do have a
  lot of wind.
• The windmills in Kinderdijk are used to drain a
  polder ( a piece of land below sealevel) in order
  to pump away the water and keep the area dry.

• The flower and its name originated in the Persian
  empire.
• The wild tulip grows in Iran, Afghanistan,
  Turkey and other parts of Central Asia.
• An Ambassador of the Ottoman Empire ( Now Turkey)
  brought it to the Netherlands in 1554.
• The word tulip, which in from Ottoman Turkish
  means tülbend, " (The English word turban)
